Potential 2016 Offseason Targets

The Braves will be looking to add pitchers who are durable, overpaid, and can be acquired without giving up any prospects with real value.

Think along the lines of Shields, Miley, and Garza. I'm sure we can brainstorm another 5-6 guys who fit that mold.

I can already see the headlines from Bowman when Shields is acquired. Stories about Big Game James coming to Atlanta looking to shake off his terrible seasons in SD! He will be in the best shape of his life and hungry to get back to the postseason! The Braves add a legitimate playoff pitcher by only giving up Rob Whalen...the FO are geniuses!

I can definitely see the Shields trade and those puff pieces lol.

To be honest, the major spin spoon fed to the fa base is really the only thing about the rebuild that irks me.

Actually. . . Shields has been terrible and has two years left on his contract. I can't remember how much the Sox are on the hook for, but I think it's like 22 million. It's been widely speculated they will have a fire sale. I'd definitely take Shields if it would reduce the cost to acquire Sale/Q/Rodon.

I'd prefer them in reverse order actually because of the Whitesox(understandable) love for Sale, they might slightly under value other assets. Plus Rodon and Q have more team control.

Regardless of which one we get though a great LH SP fits nicely for being better next year as well as long term plans.

Would love to get some opinions on what it would take to acquire Quintana from the Sox? As in actual prospects...

Would this be sufficient?

White Sox receive:

Joey Wentz
Chris Ellis
Braxton Davidson

Braves receive:

Jose Quintana
Jhoandro Alfaro

Doubt the sox would do that but I would. Quintana has been one of the most underrated pitchers in baseball the past few years.

Thanks for the respectful response! Think if we added Ruiz it would move the needle enough? Or are we going to have to part with a Newcomb/Fried/Soroka type arm?

Yeah, I think we would have to part with something a bit more substantial. Wentz is too far away so very iffy. The other two don't carry enough value to move the needle.. even with Rio in the mix.

Just don't know if Ruiz has proven enough yet. Would prob have to throw a Fried or Soroka in. Bit if we did that or Newcomb, I wouldn't be giving them Wentz

I believe so, yes. Although, as I mentioned above, I think eating Shields salary would lessen the prospect blow.

I'd really like to get Quintana. Maybe he and Santana?

Teheran

Quintana

Santana

Folty

Wisler

I think at least Teheran, Quintana and Folty stick long term too

These packages don't even get the White Sox to answer the phone on a Quintana trade. He is currently are top 25 valued asset in the game. Guys with comparable value include Moncada, JBJ and Starling Marte.

He has a surplus value of $100m+, and would require multiple top 50 prospects to acquire.

I tend to agree with you. However, I don't have a lot of faith in the Whitesox player evaluation skills. Neither does the Whitesox fan base. If they have a fire sale we need to be first in line.

Even still, it would definitely take much more than the proposed deal.

Sorry guys... Enscheff had spoken and he has proven that he knows everything.

So are you saying I'm wrong? Quintana won't cost multiple top 50 prospects to acquire?

Or are you just whining like a little bitch because someone knows more than you as usual?

Either way, I think a deal for a pitcher like him and another guy like Santana/Shields/Garcia has to be made if we are going to truly compete. I've really enjoyed our current run and I think we could be a pretty decent team next year, but adding a really solid 2-3 type pitcher and an innings eater plus a Ramos/Cespedes (really solid bat) would put us with the wildcard contenders.

I wonder if the Dbacks are having buyer's remorse over Greinke. If so, what would it take to get him? Newcomb, Jace, Dustin Peterson, Gant and Krol?

his age with his contract makes him very hard to trade. I would in no way give up a ton to have to pay Zack that crippling salary.

I wonder how the White Sox got Quintana to sign an extension through his age 31 season. I thought for sure that players like that bolt for FA after 6 years so they can cash in on that huge contract.

Having a player under control with exclusive negotiation rights is in no way a benefit. Players always know what their top dollar will be, ignore risk, and wait until that day when they will assuredly get that top dollar.
