Potential 2016 Offseason Targets

Updated with additional names and updates.

Valbuena could make for an interesting platoon partner for Garcia if they decide to give Ruiz another season at Gwinnett IMO.

When Ryan Howard fails to find a DH job how about bringing him on as a lefty power bat off the bench? Old man has a 900+ OPS in the 2nd half.

Updated to include Danny Duffy.

He was mentioned as potentially "available" since DMGM's going to be forced to significantly reduce salary for 2017.

Wonder what a Duffy/Moustakas deal might need to look like? Something along the lines of Newcomb/Sims/Ellis perhaps? Might be pretty interesting - add the two of them (IF Coppy would be given time to work out an extension for Duffy that just buys out 1 or 2 free-agent years) plus Santana (for Gant and Whalen) and you'd certainly have all the makings of a contender in 2017 and 2018...

Teheran/Duffy/Santana/Folty/Wisler

CF- Ender, SS- Dansby, 1B- Freeman, LF- Kemp, 3B- Moustakas, C- Flowers, RF- Markakis, 2B- Peterson/Albies

Duffy would give you that lefty we need (and a stronger one than anyone mentioned short of Sale/Quintana), and even if you could just extend him through 2018 he'd be a good bridge to Fried/Allard/Soroka/Touki - all of whom could be ready for 2019. You could arguably be in a position to shop Wisler and/or Blair in 2018 since Weigel might be ready by then as well.

I'm not a big Moustakas fan, but I would absolutely be down for a deal like that.

Quote from Coppy yesterday. This reinforces what he and Hart have said previously . . . they will look to add to the 2017 team without sacrificing significant young talent. So would be very surprised if we signed a QO free agent or made a trade for a player that would require us to part with a high-upside prospect.

“There may be somebody that we thought would price themselves out that comes in at a great bargain deal,” Coppolella said. “There’s probably (a preference) to fill a need through free agency rather than trades, due to the fact we’ve worked so hard to add all this young talent, the last thing we want to do is trade away three or four of them that we really like so that we can get a quick fix. Everything we’ve done has been the hard way, it’s been build for the long haul. There haven’t been any quick fixes. And I think that’s why we’re going to build something that’s going to be long-lasting.”

I'm still thinking bargain shop and no big deals.

Jeremy Hellickson, Castro and a Bud Norris type.

Hellickson is going to ge a QO for sure. The Stros are talking about bringing Castro back and could play that gamble as well if the catching market keeps drying up

The phollies can afford to offer him a QO.. I think he takes it if he is offered one. getting a raise from 7 to 16+ million is hard to turn down. BorAss is his agent though, so he may push him for a longer deal.

Then it won't be him.

We'll go for the top of the market non-QO SP......as exciting as that sounds.

I would love to bring in Danny Duffy... the guy has great stuff and is a lefty... I'd see if we could send a package for him and Mous... Would hope we could extent them both.

I don't think anyone would disagree with that approach at all (myself included). That said, I don't think Moustakas would cost any of our top kids, but the lack of available Pitching would require at least one premium prospect for even one year of Duffy IMO. I certainly wouldn't give up any (even if it's just one) of our top guys without being able to extend either of them to bridge the gap to the Frieds/Allards/Rileys/Maitans/etc. were for sure going to have enough time to be ready (2019 at the absolute earliest).
