2016-2017 Off-Season Thread

Reading between the lines, it sounds like adding another durable starter to log innings is a must-have for Coppy, even after the Dickey signing. As far as free agents go, that would equate to Colon or Volquez and would rule out quite a few other guys.

I think Volquez could be a good get as another 4/5 on the back end with Dickey.

The thing is we still need that 2/3 to team with Julio and Folty. That's the trade market Coppy is talking about.

Absolutely. I think people who expect a 1-2 aren't going to get it. That's why I keep saying Hammel or Santana. Colon is definitely a good option, but those guys make the most since. If we can sign him, I think Hammel is incredibly likely.

Teheran, Hammel, Folty, Dickey, Wisler.

"We're looking for innings," Coppolella said. "We're looking for guys to suck up innings so that we don't have to kill our bullpen. We've been real transparent about what it is that we want to do: add guys that can eat innings on short-term deals. [Signing Dickey] fits exactly with the plan we have outlined, so we're thrilled to be able to get this done this early."

They have been transparent and this quote is a pretty good summary of what they are trying to do. I think the comment on the bullpen is interesting. I suspect they would like to go with 7 in the pen, and realize that having starters who can give them innings is what will allow them to do this. It is also a hint that Snitker will manage the pen a bit differently in 2017. I think the quality of starters (or lack thereof) we had in 2016 led to some departures from what they team considers best practices when it comes to bullpen management.

I'm thinking Miguel Montero may be an option. He's in the last year of his contract and is owed $14M. He had a real down year. His BABIP was 30-40 points lower than his average. His defense un characteristically went down as well. He's a switch hitter who hits lefty better. He's been known as a good clubhouse guy. He could probably be had rather cheap.

Jays just signed Morales. Probably a precaution in case they don't lose Encarnacion, but if they do resign him then they have an even more dangerous lineup than they've had the past couple of years. They add a starter and they might make another run at this thing.

Jays SP is pretty good.

Arent too many teams with as good of a top 4 as Estrada, Stro, Sanchez, and Happ.

Jays need bullpen help more-so than SP.

It is being reported now that the Yankees are willing to eat half of McCann's $34m salary over the next 2 years. However, they want 2 significant prospects back.

Having McCann at 2 years and $17m would make some sense. The cost to get him may make it not make sense in the end.

I am at the point where I just want Coppy to tell the Yankees to **** off. I wouldn't give them 2 significant prospects for McCann if they paid all his salary. Yankees, you signed him to that ridiculous contract, now enjoy those benefits.

Blair and Rio Ruiz? Come on, even at half the price, McCann isn't worth much more than two solid prospects.

Although, I do want him back. He'd be much better than Weiters IMO.

It would be awesome to have B-mac back, but sorry Stankees. You will eat half his salary and get a marginal prospect back or you will just keep him. F that.. Really though..what is the realistic expectation from B-mac.. 2 WAR?

Source: Yankees have asked the Astros for Springer + others as return on McCann. Astros hesitant to give up Springer, this may kill deal.

Hahaha how stupid. If the Astros even contemplate this, they're a horrible franchise.
