Well, I guess if you're going to get in to a bidding war it's best to do it with the Rays.

I'm not sure why we're so hellbent on filling the catcher spot so early. I'm guessing we plan on trading high on Recker as well as Markakis in other deals. (with the new catcher being a veteran clubhouse guy)

The Rays seem to be the team that values pitch framing the most of all MLB clubs, so it's not surprising they are making the biggest push to sign him.

If the cost starts to approach 3/30 I don't think he is a very good value.

Personally don't want any part of Ramos. 275 lbs. coming off his SECOND ACL tear and expecting him to be able to squat for 130 games a year for the next 4 seasons just strikes me as a recipe for disaster.

Castro for 4 or Ramos for 4?

I think Ramos handles the bat much better through his age 33 season? (fwiw, i see him listed at 257?) If he needs to be moved, I think he will hit plenty for him to still have value, especially after a year or two with us.

I'd rather have him for 3 years, but I doubt he signs for that. I don't want any real long term deals ("long" being 3+ in my mind) and let the prospects move as they would but catcher is a real issue for us.

Either would be a bad mistake IMO.
 
Castro supposedly has multiple 3 year offers on the table. If it were up to me, I would offer around 3/25 plus a 4th year option at about $10m with a $1m buyout, and say take it or leave it, then move on. If some other team wants to go 4 years guaranteed or give him 3/30+, they can have him.

If Castro falls though, call the Cubs about Montero. He is only controlled for 1 more season, but he is another elite pitch framer, bats LHed, and would be an excellent platoon-mate with Flowers. He will be a QO candidate after next season.

Yeah, I don't think I'd go 4 years on Castro. I'd be surprised if any team goes that far. Montero would fit well, but not sure why the Cubs would want to trade him and risk exposure if Contreras gets hurt.

There were some rumblings that Montero was unhappy about his lack of playing time now that Contreras is with the MLB club.

"Braves frothing at the mouth to empty the farm" is rarely a good media management strategy.

Edit: There was a White Sox site that took DOB's "Braves focused on Sale" tweet and expanded it to, "Braves willing to decimate farm for Sale" and attributed it to O'Brien. He was pissed.

Pretty good plan, if the Cubs intend to catch Schwarber, but I don't think they do. Ross retired, so they're no longer 3-deep.

I understand the value of defense and framing at the position, but Castro's bat leaves me wondering why these numbers are being thrown around. I don't see him every day, maybe I'd appreciate him more.

Ramos moves well for a big man - at least he did. And while he's a big man, he's not 275 big.

If there were a creative way to share the risk of reinjury and Ramos were willing, he'd be my pick.

Seeing as Castro has 4 or 5 offers I feel like he is way more in demand right now. Ramos may be a later signee at a great rate.
