Braves acquire garcia

I don't think we overpaid for what Garcia is, but I would have preferred a free agent . . . even if a slight overpay. That's probably me being overly stingy with mid-level prospects though.

This is kinda another meh deal. Both sides got 2ish WAR total in my opinion (Gant is decent but I think he's a mop-up or lackluster 5th starter). Ellis and Dykstra are complete non-factors.

How many years does Gant have his contract?

Gant has like 5-6, even still, not like the Braves dont have anyone to replace them.

I see this side too. I just really don't think we were gonna do anything with Gant, and Ellis looked terrible in AAA.

Still a goofy trade.

If we can flip Garcia at the deadline and get similar value, I suppose this makes sense at a level, but I'm tempted to think that Coppolella's ADHD has kicked in and he's bent on making a move or two that are premature to our being a legitimate contender. Minor league depth isn't the end all and be all, but I think we need to be a little cautious. Of the 5 guys we've traded in the last week, I think Povse has the highest ceiling although I think Gant and Ellis will have big league careers. Dykstra is lost in the shuffle.

I'm guessing that Coppy thinks that if we aren't contending we can flip Garcia at the deadline for essentially the same type of prospects as we just gave up for him. I'm pretty meh on this deal overall. Don't think it helps much but don't think it hurts at all.

It may not be sturdy, but the John's have done their damnedest to build a bridge from likes of Williams Perez to Newcomb, Fried, and Blair.

I think this deal is as much about clearing up space on the 40 man roster than specifically just Garcia. In two trades this week, we cleared up that problem.

As for the players,

Garcia - meh

Gant - interesting delivery, but meh

Ellis - meh

Dykstra -meh

I would prefer we save that budget to take on a bad contract for draft pick / prospect swap like we have done in year's past. Though I will admit, it is at least somewhat nice to know that we have brought in starting pitchers for cheap. Even if all of these pitchers suck next year, it beats signing Ian Nova for 5/75 million.

Kind of interesting that the Braves packaged together a non-prospect and two middling pitchers they acquired as a throw in and as part of a minor deal.

Braves are sort of shifting around assets now.

If Jamie Garcia rebounds to be an above average lefty they should easily get this kind of package back at the deadline. If not, they have not given up much.

I think the Braves have a better chance of both winning games and getting better in the future with Garcia than they did with Gant and Ellis.

Sort of interesting, the Braves turned Uribe and Kelly Johnson into middling Mets prospects Gant and Whalen. They then used the two to grave a veteran starter and a former first rounder from 2014. I sort of think that was good value out of Uribe and Kelly Johnson.

I din't think Ellis will have an MLB career and I'm still about this.

Also, thanks Heyward. I'm on my phone or I would have done the normal post thanks.

Love it personally - but I've been big on Garcia for a good while.

Buys a full year for Wisler, Blair, Newcomb, and Sims in Gwinnett. Then you've got Fried and Weigel in case they all flop. Then come the young guns.

Yes. It's all about shifting assets. They're using depth of middling prospects to acquire talent that can hopefully get them better assets. I think this is their hope at the deadline as well. If they're in it they can trade the prospects they're not high on for players that can help now and trade away pitching on one year deals to acquire better prospects. The hope is guys like Wisler, Newcomb, Blair, Fried, or Weigel can step in and allow that to happen.

They've said since the start of the offseason that they're buying and selling. It's not traditional and I enjoy watching it. There are risk of course, but payouts as well.

This is the first move we've made this offseason that I don't like.

I don't think any of the three prospects are all that good, but I don't like the idea of giving up what could be somewhat useful pieces for an injury prone starter with only one year of control left.

I actually liked gant as a potential fastball-change up guy out of the pen with his K numbers. I know bullpen guys aren't that valuable, but how valuable is one year of an injury-prone starter in a year we aren't going to compete anyway?

I also see this as them admitting the Simmons deal was bad. If this is all Chris Ellis is worth, we should've gotten way more in return for Simmons.

About Simmons, I don't see it that way. We got the Angels to pick up his whole Salary, and obviously Newcomb was the prize.

What's there not to like? Let's be careful not to overvalue Gant and Ellis. Their back end starters with limited upside. Nice pieces to have but Jaime has a proven track record. He's very good when healthy. Low risk with who we have for a potentially solid mid rotation pitcher. I like it

Yet trading depth arms like that for a guy (with a bad attitude who doesn't appear interested in listening to coaches) on his way to a third trip through A-Ball has some people talking "steal".

But...but...but...I thought they were going to get Archer or Sale?

Garcia has had tons of injury problems. He is likely a 0-1 win upgrade over someone like Wisler...at the cost of $12M and a prospect that has a pulse.

Yet another "win now" move that won't make the team win, but does buy time for the young pitchers to develop while giving the illusion they are building a winner. Hopefully a non-prospect went to the Cards.

Oh shut up.... even you were starting to give out possible Sale packages excitedly when the smoke was dense

Like the Deal except for Gant. Always liked him and think he will be an MLB pitcher for a while. Still, Garcia is a very good pitcher if he can stay healthy. If still looking for an ace, this may make Folty a trade chip. Hope not.

What?? Ellis was the throw in player in that deal. Newcomb at the time was the big get as he was a top 25 prospect in baseball. Plus Aybar who was a proven MLB SS.... no one could have ever guessed he would have regress as bad as he did.
