we were probably thinking hard about releasing Whalen b/c of 40 man issues. We traded two quarters for the shot at $2, knowing that the most likely scenario is 0.
1. Povse still wasn't in our top 20, or at least he shouldn't have been. And even with Povse moving in the right direction and Jackson moving in the wrong direction, Jackson is still ranked higher. Thus, Povse is peaking and Jackson is bottoming out, and still Jackson's value is currently higher or at the very least similar. That's exactly when you should sell high and buy low, which is what we did.
2. Whalen's value is even less than Povse's and not enough to really make a material difference in any trade.
I will just disagree that those 2 guys are top 20ish talents in our system. And again, Jackson was ranked higher in Seattle's system than Povse now is. Trying to compare Povse in ours vs. Jackson in theirs is just a way to try to make it look different than it is.
He was according to unbiased 3rd parties who do this kind of ranking.

Yep, I'd be thrilled with Adell. Love the tools, and think he could turn into a building block along with Maitan.
No. If he was, you would have heard a WHOLE lot more grumbling about sliding off the #1 pick.
The blurb on him was probably the least friendly I've seen on him. Royce Lewis looks like an interesting one after reading that.
Ultimately, I just want the best player, but it'd be nice if that person was a hitter. Any college pitcher is probably going to be along the timeline of Fried, Allard, Soroka, Touki, etc. I'm a big Faedo fan because I watch him a lot, but taking a hitter would be great.

This is the year I'd personally love to see us go with the toolsy bats since we got high-ceiling high school arms last year.
Jeren Kendall or Adell if one is there at #5 and a trade for a Competitive Balance Pick where we scoop up Vientos.
I agree, and yet it's still a profile I would be fine drafting at 5. 4 potential plus tools, with the only thing questionable being the hit tool? I would be completely fine with that. You're talking about somebody who could eventually profile as about a .270 guy with massive power who can run and play any OF position with a big arm? Sure, sign me up.

Povse had a good year at a low level in the minors.
It's just as probable that he just finished the best season of his career and was sold at the height of his value as it is that he is going to be able to keep his numbers looking great without strike out stuff.
While Jackson was sold at his absolute floor and could turn it around. To act like any of us know is silly. Its all up to the player and the organization to develop him.

Again, this looks the Braves going on with their idiotic strategy of collecting former first round pick busts. Jackson should have been available for Braxton Davidson or some other similar bust. Not a guy who is getting better and better and better at each stop. That includes high school to college and up the line.

Chip, I've always liked Povse, and the more I think about it, I'm with you. He's not striking out 9-10/9, never will, but that's offset by two things - he's not even walking 2 per 9, and his HR/9 has been between .2 and .5 each stop. That's the profile of a power sinkerballer, with the additional bonus of the extra few inches of downward tilt. If he sharpens his secondary pitches he may be a bit less hittable, at which point you're talking about a 2-3 SP, maybe. He's not "just a guy" as many numbers guys might contend.
I like the deal from the Braves' side if they move Jackson back to catcher, because if he can play it the bat isn't as critical and they can take their time with him. He's immature....he's also young and could figure it out.
I like the deal from the Mariners side because like you, I think Povse is massively under-appreciated.
I think the deal works for both teams. But while AA is not considered the low minors, Povse's success there was driven largely by a low BABIP against and a high LOB%. His K-rate dropping so precipitously is not a good sign. The chances of him being a 2-3 SP in the majors are about 0.5%, at best.
His likely ceiling is a guy who strikes out about 5-6 per 9, walks very few, and gets hit at a decent clip. Basically a guy who could potentially be a #5 on a mediocre team, sort of a rich man's Williams Perez. And again, that's probably about the best-case scenario for him unless he captures lightning in a bottle.
