Braves trade Mallex and Simmons to M's for Gohara and Burrows

I don't think I'm as high on Mallex as a lot of you guys, so I'm actually OK with the deal. Certainly doesn't feel like a steal or anything though.

Here's Dave Cameron's write up: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/instagraphs/the-mariners-are-making-all-the-trades-again/

His last paragraph:

"If you’re the Braves, though, you have to be pretty thrilled about this. Even if Simmons might have some real value as a potential high-end reliever, turning him and a guy blocked by Ender Inciarte into another high-upside pitching prospect is a pretty nifty move. While we don’t know exactly what the Mariners are doing, it seems pretty clear that the Braves saw a chance to turn a couple of spare parts into a potential core piece, and jumped on it when they could."

tells me that Coppy is thinking about keeping the farm restocked. is he about to move some pitching for something?? I don't like the trade initially.. I think Mallex has big upside to become a better player than Ender.

I don't think Mallex will be better than Ender, but this was certainly a very poor use of his value. This may be the worst trade Coppy has made.

It does make sense as a precursor for a larger move, but I feel like we keep saying this and nothing happens lol so...

Yeah. Gohara is the highest upside player in this trade. Still seems like a light return for Mallex and Shae.

This is the same way I feel at first blush. We got the highest upside player in the trade (which usually bodes well), but it somehow feels like we should have done a little better.

fine with the pieces traded.. not happy with the return. I think they should have let mallex start in AAA and rebuild his value. Simmons is also spare parts, but a very good pitcher.

I'm assuming that makes it even more likely we'll get an RHH CF. Almost have to get that done now. Desmond Jennings and Austin Jackson being the most obvious targets.

we just cleared 2 spots on the 40 man.. this smells like something more.

Twitter chatter that Seattle and Tampa talking and Mallex may be on the move again.. interesting..

Another trade where the Braves give away quality ML talent for unknown minor league players who most likely will never make an impact at the big league level.

Yeah this has to happen now. Crossing my fingers for your boy Jennings.

Pretty sure you felt Mallex and Shea were minor league who we hyped up that would never amount to anything either.

The crux of Cameron's take on this trade hinges on Mallex being a 4th OFer. I think he is easily a 2-3 WAR starting caliber CFer, not a 0-1 WAR bench player.

I like the upside of Gohara, but he's pretty risky. Mallex I feel is an extremely safe bet to at very least be a very good 4th OFer, but has the potential to be a better version of Billy Hamilton, which is a pretty damn good player.

I don't think it'll be a good trade for us in the long run, but it's also pretty likely that none of these guys go on to be anything more than role players. So it could prove to be a pretty inconsequential trade.

Should have tried to get Zunino back also. Seems pretty clear that we are only getting a C if it's for a one year deal. This hints to me we are going full speed ahead after Lucroy next off season. Like the upside of Gohara but I definitely must have overvalued Smith quite a bit. Can't say I'm thrilled with the return.

I'm not sure how I feel yet, but this is very interesting. We now have two spots pen on the 40 man roster. I'd expect another trade or free agent signing to be announced soon.

I knew Mallex was gone when we signed Ender.

Shae was going to face an uphil battle as a mid innings righty reliever. I assumed he or Akeel would be traded before the Spring. I guess we like Akeel more.

We are stockpiling lefties with high K rates. That's never a bad idea in this game.

Well we probably unloaded Simbrel because of potential injury again.

Does Gohara have an injury history? Not sure why we unloaded Mallex for this.

LHP that can hit 100 and could still potentially start don't grow on trees. I like this deal for the same reason I liked the Alex Jackson deal, and that's because the upside is immense. It's risky, but we've built a level of depth that allows us to take on those risks.
