Spring Training '17

I've seen some industry opinions in a couple of national media articles this Winter around Wieters' defense being unfairly spat on by framing metrics. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt on that and say he's an average defensive catcher / game-caller, etc. When you look at his offensive profile, neither projection system has him in the top 15 catchers offensively. Add on to that his injury concerns, and it's difficult for me to see why his market value should be significantly higher than 1 year / $5-6m.

I hate deferred deals too. especially when you already deferred 2-3 other players. It is like the gNats are already expecting to be rebuilding in 2020 and beyond. Nothing like paying several players who no longer contribute to the big club.

Deferring money is an excellent strategy. The problem is most players won't accept this type of deal, but for someone like Weiters that was running out of time, he had to do so. Read up on time value of money, my friend. Would you rather pay $1,000 for a computer right now or $500 right now and $500 in 5 years?

I don't understand the Norris wants.. he is making 4.2 and not really worth that imo.. no need to replace the Suzuki/Recker backups at this point.

That would depend on the interest rate.

Is it confirmed anywhere yet that Wieters' contract is interest free?

I would rather spend the 1000 now than spend 500 in 5 years for a computer that is already obsolete. If I wanted a new computer(which I would after 5 years), I am having to spend 1500 to buy a computer worth 1000.

If I couldn't afford to pay 1000 for a computer now, then I need to shop in the 500 computer isle.

From what I read previously, the deferral deals in MLB contracts are interest free. I could be wrong on that though. Boras loves the headline grabbing total salary structure though.

interest has nothing to do with it. In 2021, if 1 WAR cost 12 million, the gnats will have to pay 17 million to a player to get that 1 WAR. They kicked that money down the road and will pay someone 5 million who will not contribute to the win total for that year. And you know players who except deferred money are getting more money to do so.. So in essence the interest is just built in basically. There is no amount of spinning a gNats fan can do to make me think deferring all these contracts are going to be a good thing down the road. The are great right now, because the gNats are broke.. but when it is time to collect, they better hope they have something to show for it.

Then you are a financial idiot. Sorry to be harsh, but it is true. You would rather effectively pay $1000 than effectively pay $900.

Hint, here is your better strategy:

Pay $500 now. Take the $500 you save over the next 4 years and invest it at 4%. (or whatever) Now take your $585 that you have in 5 years and pay off your other $500 obligation and take the $85 and put it toward a new computer.

Dude, you have zero financial sense. Stop now.

wow, so you are now putting extra layers that were not available to me at first. You really think anyone is going to offer me 1000 now or 500 and 5 years later 500 more.. without a penalty to me.. you my friend are the idiot.

you would rather have Wieters at 10 million this year vs. 1.5 for Suzuki? plus Wieters has the option of taking another 11 million from us next year if he stinks? I think I like Suzuki better..

Suzuki could make $4 million if he reaches his incentives (110 starts). While not entirely likely, it's not out of the question that he makes almost as much as Wieters gets paid THIS year ($5 million) - it's not like Catchers don't go down unexpectedly. Flowers isn't dirt cheap if he reaches his incentives either.

I think his incentives can only get his salary UP TO 2.5 million not in addition to. but I could be wrong.. just seems weird that he would get 2.5 million just for starting 110 games. that is a almost double his base.

quick search shows that he can make 2.5 million.. interesting.

Contract Notes:
•Starts as a Catcher Incentives
$50,000 each for 65,70
$100,000 for 75
$150,000 for 80
$200,000 for 85
$250,000 for 90
$300,000 for 95
$350,000 for 100
$500,000 for 105
$550,000 for 110

The argument here is that he is paid to be a backup. If he starts 110 games he likely is the starter and would be worth that amount.

No, I haven't added any layer. Weiters is getting paid $5 mil now and $5mil in 2021. You would rather a team pay him $10 million now.

No I am saying he is getting 10 million now because he deferred 5 later. No team was willing to pay him 10 million now obviously..

yeah, I am down with the thought.. I honestly didn't realize his incentives went that high. Not sure I would be excited to see suzuki as my starting catcher though.
