2017 Opening Day Roster Taking Shape

They released Paco and kept EOF....

I liked Paco's upside. With room on the 40 man I'm curious to releasing him with an option left.

I do not believe if EOF. I think we owe him b/c we Freddied his arm. He should get a desk job for 10 years at 100K to make up for it. But the first sign of him doing well in a MLB game I'm looking to flip him for anything of value and bring up Paco....but Paco's gone.

Strange move

The fact that they valued a 40 man roster spot more than Paco should tell you something about how far out of favor he'd fallen. It was apparently not all about concern over his on field ability.

Why do people keep saying this? Wood would have saved us from blowing money on someone like Colon. Peraza is on fire and the hype train is going huge this spring... the Reds love him and traded Phillips to give him a spot to play. Both of these players are valuable assets.

We instead have a league average player getting $18M a year clogging up left field for the next 3 years

Exactly.

Wow, they release Paco and he's not even hurt. I thought he must be hurt, nope. I don't like this at all and I'm tired of saying that too.

Paco could've been stashed in the minors too as he has options.

Can't we still release a few people. Sorry but this bench is dreadful....

I agree, it stinks. But they already told Boni he's made it and added him to the 40-man so probably not. They may still add someone like Clint Robinson but probably not Coghlan or Jennings (nor other CF options available).

I'm still pissed because we traded Alex Wood. That was pretty much my least favorite part of the deal -- he'd STILL be a really good asset for us.

Teheran, Colon, Wood, Garcia, Folty is better than what we could have. The kid is still young.

I'm not convinced Coppy thinks we can really be competitive. This 2017 deal seems like a false flag op all the way to another top 5 pick

I'm torn, but I tend to agree with this. I think the team legitimately thought we'd compete by 2017, but drew back the expectations when the trading frenzy began. I think we can definitely compete by 2018, though.

They wrote Peraza off because the Braves traded him away, so that's what homers do.

You know good and well you don't believe Peraza has much of an MLB future.

But you're not a Braves fan, so if you can make it look bad for the Braves, you'll do it.

Looking forward to seeing how Peraza does this year if Scooter Gennett doesn't end up stealing a lot of ABs from him. If you recalibrate his BABIP a bit to be more in line with what he delivered in the high minors, I think his half-season of ABs at the MLB level is decent indicator or what he will be. Maybe a slash line of 280 / 310 / 380. Above average baserunner, slightly below average at 2B. Can moonlight at SS and OF if needed. As far as 2017 production, I'd rather have Peraza than Jace, but would rather have Phillips than Peraza. I may be more negative than most on my defensive valuation on Peraza though. As I mentioned with Jace a couple years ago, Peraza is the kind of guy I would expect to be non-tendered before he reaches free agency.

I think he has much more of an MLB future than Olivera or Kemp. Therefore, he is more valuable than the guys he was used to acquire.

But The Genius will make it all OK, so no worries.

It looks like both Desmond Jennings and Chris Coghlan are available but we already settled on Boni and co.

The Genius has determined it is better to keep Bonifacio on the roster instead of taking a chance on a 30 year old guy with a career OPS that's 66 points higher, who also has a non-zero chance to come back from that injury and be the 3 WAR player he was in TB.

A bench of Boni, D'Arn, Jace and Kurt may be the worst 4 man bench ever assembled in the history of MLB.

But whatever, in the The Genius we trust. Braves Way(tm)!

Genius or not, this bench is putrid. Where is Keith Lockhart when you need him!?
