JMO, but it's far too early for me to have a feel for what the brass is liable to do at the beginning of next season at this juncture.
I definitely agree that breaking camp with two rookies is unlikely - however, I'm quite sure none of us saw signings of Colon and Dickey and a trade for Garcia back in the winter of 2015 either. The point is that there are now enough arms in the higher levels of our system that there's always the chance that it could happen.
What part of my point that they could easily decide to pick up Dickey's option and re-sign Bartolo (or add another one of the many veteran arms that'll be available) for one year (or maybe a 1 + 1 deal like Dickey's) to only leave them with one opening didn't make that clear? Assuming that happened, you'd then have an open competition for the #5 spot between Wisler, Blair, Sims, Newcomb, and potentially Fried, Weigel, Allard, and Soroka next spring.
I actually did predict Jaime Garcia to some degree and I wasn't surprised they also signed a veteran to a one year deal, though two was somewhat surprising.
I agree that Newcomb, Sims, Wisler, and Blair should have opportunity to earn a spot sometime this summer and then again in Spring. I just can't imagine they would start the AA kids in the rotation out of spring training. To me that's pretty close to malpractice.
