Anyway, to address the gun vs. book thing, it was an anecdotal point he was making. If you read the comment it was clear he was pontificating. Not really believing it to be 100% true.

Trump is just flat out lying or ignorant. Andrew Jackson owned slaves. As president he placated the south who was butthurt that abolitionists were mailing out anti-slavery tracts and let local postmasters determine what to do with them instead of handling it federally which is what the USPS is. All Jackson would have done is the same thing his successors did, punt the ball for the next guy to handle. End result being a country that's attacking itself. Because of people like Jackson.

Enough of the Obama spin. Good grief. Anyway, Jackson did avert a Civil War in 1832. Perhaps his skills could have avoided the one in the 1860s. Probably not but not out of the realm of possibilities. That's what Trump was referring to. Btw, the reason why everybody kicked the can is because they knew what would happen, which would be a Civil War. Lincoln had the courage and did the right thing but look at the cost.

Oh Jeez, not another "what really caused the Civil War" question. I don't even trust most southerners to answer that question correctly, I certainly don't trust most northerners to answer it correctly, I definitely don't trust most Yankees to know how to answer it correctly, and I sure as hell don't trust any Yankee politicians to know how to answer it correctly, if at all!!!

Jackson didn't avert civil war in 1932. He actually said after the Nullification crisis that slavery would likely result in dissolution of the union. Or would be the next pretext may be the proper wording, but I digress. He wouldn't have really diverted the civil war, just if he was lucky, he would have just moved it back further. Slavery was what drove the Civil War.

It's a pretty good chunk of the story, though. Surely there were tensions between the North and South that went beyond owning human beings en masse and it's not like the North was some pure place built around abolition, but the debate over the expansion of slavery was pretty much the defining issue that led to the war.

IIRC the Caribbean slavery was commonly dissolved by revolution. So yeah. ALso Britain ending slavery and pressuring other nations to end it played a huge part.

Slavery was the reason for the revolution, and it mainly was because of southern indignity. Brazil ended slavery around a similar time, but they let it go because slavery was basically just a social status thing. And they weren't quite as dumb.

Yes, it was largely about the right to own slaves. The state's claimed the right to do whatever they saw fit and the federal government said no. It was just the slavery issue that caused enough tension to cause the war. Even if the South won slavery would not have lasted anyways. It would have just morphed into a different form of slavery like we have today in America. Now we just make arbitrary laws and strictly enforce them on the people least able to defend themselves and call them criminals to justify their enslavement.

The South didn't phase out slavery because in great part the theologians of note were too embedded in the status quo. Of the greatest theologians of the day, the South could boast of 4 (Thornwell, Dabney, Girardeau, and Palmer) - yet, instead of challenging the institution they defended it. The South needed a Newton and a Wilberforce....

Wasnt the north sold on the idea that the civil war was about States rights and months after the war began, Lincoln said the war was about slavery? The north revolted and went ape**** because they didn't agree with slavery but they didn't want to die for it.
