Newcomb with a better start. Still walky and I guess he must have let his PC get up there early again.

5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 9 SO.

His ability to handle higher pitch counts looks like it will be key to his career.

I would like him to not walk guys, but his stuff is so good that he can work around it. As a fan of Atlanta, he will probably frustrate the hell out of me since he will be in "trouble" several innings each game even though he works out of most of them.

I look forward to him coming up though and hope after this weeks Bartolo meltdown they start the experiment.

Could we possibly see Acuna in AAA later this year? I hope the Braves don't rush him.

If he keeps hitting like he is, I don't think there's any doubt he will be in AAA this year... especially with his increased walk rate and decreased K rate at AA from A+

I thought Acuna was hitting a bit of a rough skid...then he wasn't. Maybe he will go all 1996 Andruw on the minors and simply shred all levels in one season. So far this year he has raked in 2 of the worst hitting environments in the minors.

I would like to see the Braves keep him in AA all year, start him in AAA next year, and only promote him in 2018 if they are clearly contending (unlikely) and need an upgrade in the OF (very likely).

What's the latest on Cumberland's catching? Will it allow him to be promoted?

Nobody I have read say anything about Cumberland gives him any chance to stay behind the plate. Being a catcher at the MLB level currently appears to be a longshot at best.

Latest blurb from BP last week:

Brett Cumberland, C, Atlanta Braves (Low-A, Rome): 2-3, 2 R, 2 HR, 5 RBI
Known more for his bat then his glove, this switch-hitting catcher features a keen eye with playable power and an advanced feel for hitting. His glove? Hey he’s a good hitter let’s focus on that!

Same website:

Cumberland might be able to catch at all (probably not).

So promote when bat is ready, huh?

They will probably just move him to LF. I heard nobody could be bad enough defensively out there to make them a below average overall player if they can post a .900 OPS.

So we have 2 catcher/LF/1b good hitters in Jackson and Cumberland.

So we have 2 catcher/LF/1b good hitters in Jackson and Cumberland.

Well, in Jackson's case he might be able to stick at C and could be a decent LF if not as long as the bat plays. Cumberland was always a 1B/DH/LF even when he was drafted.

How did Cumberland go from looking like a complete bust, to one of the best hitters in A ball in a matter of weeks???

Tip of the cap to Hursh, who got a five-out save for Mississippi by getting two double play gronders. Don't think that doesn't get noticed up top.
