MONDAY MINORS THREAD 6/5 ... First-half stretch runs

The 2019 rotation "could" be kinda nasty...

At least exciting. It may take a little while for guys like Allard and Soroka to get acclimated, especially if they're up at 21. But I'll take mediocre, young, and talented all day over mediocre and who cares.

Soroka is sporting a 4/1 K/BB ratio. He's striking out almost a batter per 9 and walking only a little over 2 per 9. The fact that he's doing this at 19 after skipping high A is crazy.

especially impressive when you consider he only throws 86-87

Holy VeLo spike batman. I last heard it was 83-85

He learned how to do that watching Colon. We're starting to see some positive benefits from having him around to mentor our young pitchers. I hear Soroka was given a locker next to Colon during spring training. Just absorbing stuff from the dominican master.

As long as he didn't absorb any weight, I would be fine with that. I actually heard Soroka throws an eephus pitch all the time.

So Tooki's walks go up and his ERA goes down, weird. I predict by the time he gets somewhat ready for the majors that he will be blocked and he'll initially be brought up as a bullpen piece...and he'll dominate there and never get a chance to start again.

It's not really weird, his ERA has been inflated quite a bit. It was always going to come down.

That can happen with young pitchers like him. Sometimes when you have your nastiest stuff it's moving so much you don't know where it's going to end up. The flip side is you don't get hurt as bad by the walks because your stuff is too nasty to barrel up. Of course, once you reach the majors you'll have hitters spitting on more pitches so you'll need to harness your stuff better.

I agree that Touki probably ends up in the pen. His fastball-curve combo could be deadly out of the pen.
