Official Draft Day, Post-Draft Thread

Also I much prefer quality over quantity when comparing the last two drafts even though it's not really apples to apples. Same argument we had when we started trading off players to start the rebuild. Wright is a huge get.

Owenby showed great power at ETSU. Won the college home run derby after 17 hr season as sophomore. Struggled two years in the cape. Not seeing much on his defense. I assume if he was great there he would have gone higher.

Weisenberg has a big frame at 6'4 or 6'5. Was low to mid 90s out of HS with some pitches in the mix. Looks like strictly relief at Stanford and his control was lacking. Mightt get a chance to try starting on.

Gary Schwartz - looks like he may be developing modest power. Ks aren't too bad. But not a ton of speed in his box score anyway.

Exactly how I feel about this situation! I was loving the 1st 3 pks but had I know the rest of the draft would've been complete garbage I would've rather gone in a different direction.

But that is how the draft is for almost every team every year because of the way the draft is set up. Look at the other teams drafts...same story. They selected three to five good ranked players, rest are senior college signs and less heralded high school players.

The only teams with more ranked selections had higher draft budgets than us (Twins, Reds, Padres, Pirates, etc.) so could afford more high bonus signings. Our draft budget is markedly lower than last year so of course we have less ability to sign ranked guys.

I'm elated with our draft. I'll take quality over quantity every single time, especially since our farm system is already loaded. If we drafted less quality, more quantity, we'd run into more playing time problems in the minors which is something we are going to already have to deal with this year with all the talent we've brought into the system in the past two years.

Dyals isn't real big at 5'11. Looks like his FB was just touching 90 out of HS.

Dyals has piqued the interest of MLB scouts with his ability to throw strikes and keep hitters off balance. Dyals has an impressive 0.56 earned run average. Out of the 18 runners he inherited, only six have scored. In 18 appearances, he is 5-0 this season with seven saves and 35 strikeouts in 32 innings pitched. Opponents are only hitting .181 against Dyals.

“He is one of the most dominant pitchers I've seen pitch in the back end of a game,” said Hall. “He has a highly competitive nature to the way he plays the game, which plays a major part in how successful he is.”

On the surface, appears to be a very underwhelming draft after Wright and Waters.

Disagree.... Tarnok and Bacon look like they could be high ceiling. I also love all the college juniors we are taking on day 3. We may get a surprise HS pick or two on the late rounds that could sign.

They grabbed a pitcher that has a high ceiling and likely won't miss, an outfielder with the potential to be exactly what the system lacks, and a mega millions lottery ticket high school pitcher.

Then fluff through the 10th round and are taking some high ceiling shots today.

They're taking home run swings in this draft. I like it.

C Zach Soria -- looks like he doesn't strike out or walk much. Not a big offensive profile and don't see much indication he is a amazing defender.

Tanner Allison 6'3 OF L/L - Looks like he has been a two way player up to this year. Had a break out season at the plate - hit .356 with 9 Hrs, only pitched three innings.

As a left hander in 2016 pitched 30 IP in relief and had walk and k rates over 10 per 9. Which is interesting.

Per some twitters - fastball up to 95 from left side, just has no command. Braves likely drafted as a pitcher, I think.
