Which everyone agrees with and has already said multiple times. I'm not opposed to dealing him now though. He still has some value, and with the career innings piling up and his time under control getting shorter, I'm fine with just taking a lesser package now.

Two deals for starting pitchers who would have not been with them long term, The White Sox get Moncada and Jimenez. Not bad at all.
I wonder if those laughing about the Sox waiting too long on Q with his early struggled still have that same thought process.
I wouldn't call their rebuild 'almost perfect'.
Frankly, I think they really misplayed their international market, they basically used up and went into the penalty for one high-profile signing; the Braves also went into the penalty but added seven high-profile signings. Massive difference in how that played out.

While this is based on their preseason rankings and not updated for the midseason this should give people another idea that surplus value is real and the basis for trades these days.
Jiminez: 60 million in value (likely 70 million after update)
Cease: 13 million in value
Rose: n/a
Fleete: n/a
I'd project Q as a 13 WAR player for the remainder of his contract. 2 WAR to finish this year. 4 next year and 3.5 the following two years.
At 9 million per WAR that puts Q's value at 117 million. He's only going to cost 32.8 million in actual salary so his surplus value would be 84.2 million which is right in line with the likely 83 million (after Eloy's boost this year) in value the Cubs gave up

They also didn't start their rebuild until after the 2016 signing period started. If they traded both Q and Sale before the 2016 season I bet they would have been more aggressive with their international signings.

This is interesting but I don't like the surplus value calculations. That's how you get teams to bite on the poo poo platter.
In this case the Sox got a super high ceiling top 10 prospect. That's the important thing. They also got a lottery ticket and two guys that probably mean nothing. That is the deal.
If I'm the Sox I'd rather have Eloy by himself than Anderson + Riley + Wentz. Give me the stud. 4 quarters does not equal a dollar in sports talent.

and who's fault was that? They didn't recognize quick enough the position they were in and the direction they were headed and because of that they missed a fairly sizeable opportunity in the international market.
I think they have done very well overall though.
I would take quality over quantity everyday as well. But multiple good prospects vs one elite prospect does mitigate overall risk and there is value in that as well. Also Anderson + Riley + Wentz doesn't even come close to the value of Eloy + Cease
To match Eloy + Cease without an elite prospect you are looking at Allard, Anderson, Gohara, and Sorokoa.
That is true. But since they started to rebuild they have also fully committed to it and not be half in half out like the Braves seemed to be when they started. Braves didn't go full rebuild until the HO trade bombed. Braves should have committed 100% from the start.
