8/6 GDT: Miami Marlins (51-57) vs. Atlanta Braves (51-58); The Battle for 2nd Place

So we're the runs scored against him lucky then or just the balls that were caught?

Why are you arguing against someone's subjective opinion whether one outing was "impressive" or not?

We know that as a data point the one outing is pretty non-determinitive. So you are just having a pissing contest over someone's opinion.

In time, we will know how good Lucas Sims is in 2017. And from there he will either improve or not improve.

Finishing 6 innings after letting up 4 with only recording an out for a kid making his second start is absolutely imoressive.

Impressive if you like feel good stories and narratives. Unimpressive for someone like me who was hoping Sims would flash some serious stuff. I'm not saying he stinks. He's just looked meh, a likely reliever.

Nobody is saying they are. But having batters hit balls right at fielders all day is not impressive. I guess some people have different standards.

Luckily we can look up stats that tell us how good he was vs how lucky he was.

Now all we need is an analytical sub forum so we can discuss those things without the kiddies chiming in every other post.

Agreed. He simply doesn't have very good stuff. The statcast data shows it beyond all doubt.

I'm interested to see if his change was good again though.

Impressed might be a strong word, but his outings have given me hope he MIGHT be a #4. Which with his rookie contract could have decent value for the team or in a trade.

If his change is as good as it appeared in his first start that could....change....everything. He could be a backend guy if that pitch is for real.

His change Didn't move as much yesterday as it did in his first start, and his velo was down about 1 MPH.

His FIP and xFIP suggest his ERA is about accurate.

Sims just isn't very good. I'm afraid it will be the same argument we have every time someone suggests a young Braves pitcher doesn't have good enough stuff to succeed for any extended period of time. The usual tired lines will be rolled out in his defense, but they will still be wrong.

I know Sims didn't hit that QS stat, but what is your opinion on that stat in general? Being a 4.50 ERA pitcher is "quality?" Legit question to you.

I know where I stand on this, but want your feedback. thethe I'd like to see your take as well.

Again, I've no idea how important spin rate is, but it actually went up to 2347 after this start

If it doesn't result in movement I can't think of any way it's positive.

Now if the Braves can figure out how to adjust his arm slot or release point to get more movement...that might get interesting.

I could live with middling stuff in the back end of a rotation if it was accompanied by an ability to hit spots, but in the one appearance I didn't nap through he seemed as though he wasn't really able to consistently do that.

Still, he's a guy that has struggled and then improved along the way and in the past has apparently lost mechanics with a promotion so I will hold out some hope for him.
