Which is part of the problem with this team. Folty has shown flashes but just can't be consistent. If Folty or Newk can't be a consistent 2-3 WAR guy then the first wave of pitching prospects has completely failed us which kicks the time table of contention down the road even further.
What's best about Phillips is that he is essentially free this year.
He predictably rebounded somewhat from his poor defensive season last year but he is losing range at 2B. He's played good defense so far at 3B so hopefully that would continue. The problem really is going to be his offense. He's going to be a mid to high 90 WRC+ hitter. As a stop gap in rebuilding years that's not really a problem but I would hope for something better out of that spot eventually.

They need to go make a deal with Colorado. Maybe the Rockies will move McMahon to 2b but seems a waste at 1B even if there is a spot. Seems like a place where the teams might line up.

Meh....Folty is definitely a big league pitcher (question if if he's an ace). Still have guys like Fried also. I think Newk and Folty are no doubt big league pitchers. I wouldn't say complete failure...more like not reaching expectations.

Blair and Wisler have also been failures. They were big acquisitions when we got them
Can you really say Blair was a big acquisition. He was the third piece of a deal that was already an overpay without him. Wisler was a big fail.

I would say the failure of any of these pitchers to become more than 1-2 win guys is THE problem with the rebuild. I really thought Folty would make big strides this year, but he is proving to be a "stuff #4" that everyone keeps dreaming on to be be much more.
If a team pours the majority of their player acquisition resources into acquiring pitchers, and none of them turn out to be better than 4/5 or AAAA guys, how can that team ever expect to contend?
During the rebuild, the Braves have seen the following Top 50-1000 prospects fail at the MLB level: Jenkins, Blair, Wisler, while guys like Newk and Folty are showing they likely won't have the control to succeed, and guys like Sims and Fried simply don't have the stuff to succeed. They have had zero pitching prospects shownthey are ready to be impactful SPs at the MLB level.
That's 0 for 7 by my count.
The failure rate of these pitchers has been so staggeringly bad the FO is considering moving elite positional talent to acquire proven SPs. That is a monumental failure no matter how someone tries to spin it.
They should have been building around position prospects and let other organizations deal with the attrition of pitching prospects.

Blair was a top 100 prospect. But maybe a throw-in to Dave Stewart.
He was also a big deal to thethe at the time he was acquired.

The rebuild badly needs at least two of Soroka, Allard, Gohara and Wright to pan out.
And by "pan out" you mean consistent 3+ win production, I'm sure.
My money is on Soroka being a 3, and Wright being a TOR guy, but not a bonafide Ace.

Yes 3+ is what I have in mind. If we have two 3+ guys, the rest of the rotation can be around 2 and the starting pitching would be good enough for a contending team.
Ranking by most likely to be a 3+ win starter for multiple years: Soroka, Gohara, Wright, Folty, Allard, Anderson, Newcomb.
