Megathread: Braves lose Maitan, Bae and 10+ plus International Sanctions.

Nicely done.

What’s the best that could happen ? Us banned from International signings for two years? I am not a fan of making guys any team has signed free agents. It doesn’t seem fair to the players involved. They signed with the team they wanted to be with and then you uproot these guys again from the home they know. Future bans seem a better idea. It’s also rough to take a top 10 pick away from a team that is not a big market team and has had consecutive loosing seasons. It’s not good for fans either. Surely they can see the business side of this and won’t make an example out of a mid market team with a new ball park because of a couple of idiots that have already been fired.

We aren’t the Red Sox, and it would be tough to survive such harsh penalties. Would almost have to trade off Our big chips and start over...again.

I know it’s bad, but don’t kid yourself....they ALL break the rules. In fact, half (if not more) or the infractions mentioned have probably been done by EVERY team if scrutinized the way we are being done. What the heck...we aren’t even winning, why would they rat us out? The guy they hated is gone. These teams that complained and ratted are idiots, because don’t think the their “own” chickens won’t come home to roost soon.

Bottom line. They need a International draft. Until that happens...there will be uncontrollable grey areas and cheating. It’s just not preventable. If Coppy was the biggest cheater, it just meant he was the dumbest....not the only one.

So you think making the players free agents would be unfairly punishing them, and your solution to all this is limiting the financial and geographical mobility of poor young teenagers even more? Hmmmm

I'm trying to withhold judgement until we see what (if any) sanctions come down from MLB.

This whole thing is just weird.

Speaking of Shanks, this is a bit from his column drooling on Dayton Moore.

The sad part about all of this was the turmoil was unnecessary. Coppolella created a great talent base for the future, but the methods with which he built that foundation obviously were not in the spirit of the heralded “Braves Way.”

If I have to pick a lesser of two evils solution, I just put all amateurs in one draft. You already have high school and college kids in same draft, why not throw in international kids too? I understand that Internationals can sign at 16, so why not just allow American kids to be drafted at 16 too instead of forcing them to finish high school?

In Europe, soccer clubs have academies where kids sign when they're like 5-6 years old. They get schooling, and grow up in their club academies. Eventually they either get transferred to another team, or they graduate to the main roster. Not saying MLB should take this route, but those that get drafted and go straight to bigs within a few months is so rare and far few. We did that with Devine and his career was basically ruined with us. At minimum these kids are going to be in the minors for 2-3 years, so they are still surrounded by older guys to help them grow up.

What was his dumbass take?

Surprisingly, I think he was actually right on most of what he said. He rightly put a lot of blame on Hart and McGuirk. Said he had heard from a lot of people about massive infighting since before the draft culminating in a draft night fight between Coppy/ Hart and the scouts over a player recommendation (disrespecting a scout is worse than pedophilia to this man).

Where he went predictably over the top is absconding JS of all responsibility. He even went as far to say he would consider JS Jr. for GM.

Oh... and that dumbass still considers "oh bee pee" to be the cutting edge of sabermetrics and that it should be ignored at all costs.

As if it's any surprise what his cro-magnon take is (for those who wish to avoid giving Bill Shanks clicks, it boils down to Dayton Moore is our sole savior and suspenders was not involved in the infractions).

Lord, hope he didn't pull a hammy while sprinting to cover JS's ass.

I have no idea how "emeritus" Suspenders's role is--perhaps it's exactly as Shanks suggests--and I don't want to implicate him in any skulduggery without more evidence. But, damn, it's amazing how it has mysteriously worked out that his "hand-picked" successors have ended up being colossal jerkoffs that no one can tolerate, yet he somehow remains, insulated from it all...and now the Prodigal Son is set to return.

Seems like the Braves front office has always had a reputation of smugness and holier than thou, according to Schultz at the AJC.

He went pretty hard at McGuirk the last time we were on this merry-go-round, and I can't necessarily say I disagree. I think McGuirk should have been gone with Wren. But this looks--admittedly, from a low-info third-party perspective--like another scrap between the old guard and the outsiders.

Things I hope for in 2020

Playoffs
stable org
JS, Hart, Bobby, Snit all officially retired and completely out of the org
Braves Way banned from the lips of anyone in the org
Chop dead

I am so ready for a new identity to be established..

WTF is a western crosschecker? I misread At first and thought you said cross dresser.

That twitter rant about Coppy and McDaniel being drinking buddies may have some truth and not just sour grapes

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Well, KM was definitely Cop's hire, and this certainly seems like a demotion.

Wouldn't be surprised if he bolts and goes back to prospect coverage. Not sure what kind of upside he can have in industry when he has Coppy's stink on him.

As admittedly ****ing weird as this whole thing has been, we still have the same squad we had yesterday and the the same hopes for the future. We should be a playoff team in 2020, regardless of whatever happens at the top. I am pretty confident in our evaluators, though less so in our player development staff, and I think we're getting close. As much as I'd love to see the "Braves Way" verbiage eliminated from the lexicon, I'd settle for some winning baseball.

Yup. Maybe the Braves jump ahead on this Maitan controversy and trade him before MLB can rip him away! Not sure what they would do in a circumstance like that.

These kids come over and have established families they stay with etc. You would basically be pulling them out of a place they have just settled down in. These are 22 years olds they’re kids!!

I don’t like the International signings the way it is right now . Having a draft is a better option, but not the only one to keep people honest.

Then you can probably rest easy now that the guys who need the Braves to win in 2018 are the ones left in charge.

They will undoubtedly cash in enough future wins to make the 2018 team an 85+ win squad. Their jobs depend on it, and after going to all this trouble to get rid of anyone who disagreed with them, they won't stop now.
