"Virtue signaling" has to be the most devalued phrase in the current lexicon, other than maybe "fake news."

Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein is one of the Democratic Party's most prolific donors.

Since the 2000 election cycle, Weinstein has donated nearly $1 million in his own name in addition to collecting and providing roughly $1.5 million as a part of "bundled" donations, which the Center for Responsive Politics defines as contributions provided by "people with friends in high places who, after bumping against personal contribution limits, turn to those friends, associates, and, well, anyone who's willing to give, and deliver the checks to the candidate."

Top Democrats including former President Barack Obama, 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, and Sens. Elizabeth Warren, Al Franken, Cory Booker, and Kirsten Gillibrand have all received contributions from Weinstein, the Hollywood mega-executive who co-founded Miramax Films and The Weinstein Company.

....

Almost immediately, Democrats began facing pressure to return their donations from Weinstein. So far, a number of prominent Democrats already have.

BuzzFeed reported that, as of Friday afternoon, 10 Democratic senators have donated campaign contributions from Weinstein to charity. They include Sens. Chuck Schumer, Martin Heinrich, Patrick Leahy, Richard Blumenthal, Kamala Harris, Booker, Warren, Gillibrand, and Franken. Many of the charities were either national or local nonprofits focused on combating sexual violence.

lol trump knew weinstein well.
regardless of politics, someone like weinstein is a scumbag. sexual assault isn't a joke, it isn't "locker room talk"; it's assault. we should take it seriously, whether it's weinstein or the president admitting to it on camera.

i'm not sure what his politics have to do with this (i personally didn't even know who he was before this, so if people are whining about it not getting as much attention as trump's admitted sexual assaults, that plays a factor). there are tons of scumbag liberals and tons of scumbag conservatives.

to speak to the actual issue, this type of thing (and even worse) has been a massive problem in hollywood for decades. money and power lets people get away with an awful lot.

I'm with you man, CNN is fake news.

A: X must denounce Y!

[X denounces Y]

A: Virtue signaling!

That's one common deployment. The other is:

A: [says something abhorrent]

B: That's abhorrent.

A: Virtue signaling!

It's usually a huge, blinking neon signpost of bad faith and/or intellectual laziness.

On the plus side, the people who wanted Trump to denounce David Duke aren't the same people calling for Hillary to denounce Harvey Weinstein, so at least people can sometimes exit the cycle that Julio mentions.

or Bill O who Trump still touts.

Don't recall Lorne Michaels or Hillary Clinton for that matter tooting the horn for Weinstein.
Would be curious to see quotes or testimonials.

Speaking in the Oval Office, Donald J. Trump praised Mr. O’Reilly as “a good person” and declared, “I don’t think Bill did anything wrong,” days after The New York Times reported that five women had received settlements after making harassment claims against him.

Or Roger Ailes. Known to be a predatory dirtbag before the news hit the papers, much like Weinstein.

"Both women said that their careers suffered after they rejected Weinstein or complained about his actions to his company."

"Mr. Weinstein has further confirmed that there were never any acts of retaliation against any women for refusing his advances."

Yeah, right. Men in positions of power over women do this all the time. They refuse advances? Career suffers. They come out and tell too many people? Career may be effectively over. Things like this are, despite advancements, I can't call women "equal" in our society. Weinstein had power over women, knew it, and used it to make them do things. This happens far too often and nothing is done about it.

https://theintercept.com/2016/10/07...-silence-sanderss-black-lives-matter-message/

In an April 10 email sent to Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook, just days before the New York primary, Weinstein invited Mook to meet up. He pointed to a Sanders ad featuring Erica Garner — the daughter of Eric Garner, who was killed by New York City police officers — as well as growing support for Sanders among Latino activist leaders. “I’m probably telling you what you know already, but that needs to be silenced, probably with the Sandy Hook issue,” he wrote:

Mook wrote back replying to Weinstein’s offer to meet up and discuss strategy: “Are you kidding? Let’s do it! I’m here all week. This is all hands on deck–it’s must win! Would tomorrow or Tuesday work?”

Throughout the primary, Clinton repeatedly assailed Sanders for his vote to limit legal liability for gun manufacturers, specifically claiming that vote was preventing the families of victims of the Sandy Hook massacre from successfully suing the industry. It was a feature of her attack on Sanders during their final debate in New York on April 14.

It was not the only instance in the hacked emails where Weinstein discussed political strategy with the campaign. On February 17, Weinstein sent Mook and Marshall a David Brooks column titled “Livin’ Bernie Sanders’s Danish Dream,” where the conservative columnist chastised Sanders for wanting to adopt much higher taxes as well as an expansive welfare state.

“This article gives you everything I discussed with you yesterday. You have the name of an economist, you have a great NY Times writer and you have a number from the WSJ. Let’s discuss,” Weinstein wrote.

“About to forward some creative. Took your idea and ran,” Mook wrote back. “Yes – this is good!” Marshall responded.

On April 17, Brad Thompson, a senior vice president of corporate communications at Weinstein’s company, sent an email to Mook and other Clinton aides highlighting some press clips of Weinstein praising Clinton and making remarks critical of Sanders. “Harvey got some solid press coverage from his CBS This Morning appearance on Friday. I hope you got a chance to see it – if not, below is the video link and the press pick-up. Harvey and I both can’t thank you enough for helping prep for this interview. Your advice was spot on – especially relating it back to his conversations with his daughter,” Thompson wrote.

I don't have time to search the WikiLeaks database today, but there are plenty more. The Clintons and Weinstein were knows to be close, which is why even the media is piling on her today.

So Weinstein, who is a predatory ****bag, was emailing (reprehensible) political advice to Hillary's campaign. Whatever Weinstein was to HRC, Roger Ailes was 1000x more to the entire Republican establishment. He was also a friend and advisor to the current President. Bill O'Reilly was the damned mayor of cranky Red America. It's been a matter of public record for over a decade that he was a perv. Trump actually defended him when the recent allegations came to light. Then there's Trump himself...

So why, exactly, is this story about a rich, entitled, sexual predator different than those others?
