Playoffs Thread

Hell of a series. Baseball is a cruel sport, especially in the playoffs.

Best record in the AL, and you're rewarded playing the team with the 2nd best run differential in baseball and the best bullpen in baseball.

Really have to lol at these guys on the post game talking about how great everything is in Yankee land when everyone wanted to run the manager out a couple days ago when it looked like they would lose an ALDS to a team that won over 100 games.

The Yankees have a ton of payroll flexbility in the coming years, and Torres, Frazier full-time soon.

They can possibly add a Harper or Machado to this group with pitchers like Adams, Sheffield on the farm. They're gonna be a problem regardless if they win it all or not.

We need to cross our fingers that our players mature and become good players. Try to add Kimbrel and stop wasting money in old players like Kemp and Markakis. We need to look for players with playoff experience. Thats why i say a few days ago people like Brian Shaw and Addison Reed.

Braves need to stop adding players like Matt Adams yes he play ok with the team. But we need to make sure we have homemade players to cover those positions when others get hurt.

Our payroll is not the best we just need to use the payroll wisely and stop getting this old players that are not going to make us win a title.

Yea. My point is this talk of firing Girardi is really stupid.

Playoffs are a crap shoot. The goal should be to get there as many years as possible, even if as a wildcard. After that anything can happen.

I don't completely buy into that. Teams can tailor themselves to have a higher chance at playoff success by concentrating talent into 2-3 dominant SPs and 2-3 dominant BP arms. We have seen the new blueprint for playoff success, and it relies heavily on a few shut down relievers taking over the 2nd half of the game.

This is why I'm really hoping that we can develop a few dominant bullpen arms out of the crop that we currently have. If Minter can stay healthy for long than we expect, that would go a long way toward accomplishing that

Well...the Yankees just pitched a game where the average fastball they threw was 98 mph. They didn't throw a single fastball under 96. Baseball is heading towards the best teams having 2-3 elite velocity arms in the BP to completely shut down opposing teams for half the game in the playoffs. I don't see any way the Braves keep up with that. They can't afford to sign Kimbrel or Chapman as FAs, and the cost to trade for those guys will be astronomical (unless it's the Braves trading away Kimbrel, of course).

Folks around here like to dream on how good the Braves pitchers are or will be, but taking a look at the stuff around the league paints a more realistic picture of where they truly stand. Gohara has legit elite stuff. Folty's stuff is already in decline. Minter is right on the edge, and he is a ticking time bomb. Freeman is also on the edge, but going into his age 31 season could mean he declines suddenly at any point. That's about it as far as elite stuff goes.

I remember this. June 2014.

They are, at least, the team for whom I'll be pulling the rest of the way.

I'll admit I was kind of pulling for the Yanks solely for reasons of nepotism. My daughter lives in NYC and is dating a guy who grew up in Houston and is a big-time Astros' fan. They went down to Boston for last Sunday's game and they managed to score tickets to next Monday's Yanks'/Astros' game. Like jpx7, I am all in on the Astros for the rest of the way.

I'm sorry about the Twins, old man.

Is he an Astros-fan or baseball fan?

When meeting him did you question him on the viability of WAR, DRS, fWAR, bWAR, FIP, xFIP, WRC+, etc?
Is your daughter a Bravos fan too or not into baseball altogether?
Did you ask him on the importance of clubs moving into the 21st century with applying saber with scouting?
Lastly, did you ask him his thoughts on “The Braves Way”?

He is an Astros' fan. I have yet to meet him. He will likely have to answer all of those questions when I do meet him, especially about his feelings on wOBA. My daughter isn't much of a sports' fan, but she now has an Astros' cap. She did go to a Braves'/Mets' game a few years back and texted me some pics.
