Around the League: 2017 offseason edition / 2018 Season

not good that our efforts so far are focused on finding takers for Adams and Muk...there is a glut of players with their skill sets

Just depends on what they are trying to do.

Adams is pretty low stakes. They can non-tender him if they can't move him. Makes sense to see if there is maybe a deal that brings back a low level prospect or someone's else's surplus.

Markakis is expiring so I see those stakes as low also since I am writing off any real importance of playing well in 2018.

I would prefer not to have Acuna on the opening day roster. I'd prefer not to have long term deals coming out of this free agent class.

Not making excuses by any means, but that's what happens when you have back/neck/shoulder surgeries and can't work out - pretty comical that folks have *itched at Markakis providing league-average offense given his problems.

I think this speaks to exactly what folks were complaining about: Markakis was a sketch investment in part for that reason. I, for one, don't blame Markakis for his averageness (I've been a fan of his since he entered the league, in fact); I blame the FO for thinking his likely-best-case averageness (aging into his thirties, coming off back issues) was what the team needed at the point they signed him.

But, hey, those guys are gone now.

Do NOT inject well reasoned logic into these discussions.

But you'd likely have to pay more forbguys like that on the open market.

MAdams is going to be non-tendered because he isn’t worth $4.6M, and then will sign for less.

The Braves will have to eat money to trade Markakis because he isn’t worth $11M.

So no, teams would not have to pay more for similar FAs.

I think Adams gets the same or more to be an everyday 1b somewhere. He wouldn't be a starter for us and we can't afford 5 million to a backup 1b. If he could field another position competently, we would keep him.

Nick you are probably right on, though I do wonder how guys like Melky and CarGo will do the FA front. Their probably the closest comparable to age overall value on the FA market.

Jim Johnson and Sean Rodriguez were $5 million dollar players.

If MAdams is worth $5M the Braves will be able to trade him by Friday. If he is non-tendered that means no team thought he was worth that much.

Pretty simple.

If he signs for less than 5 million after being non-tendered it will be a pretty good sign the market doesn't think he is worth that much.

If no one trades for him, it would be a pretty good sign no one thought it was worth the acquisition cost plus his estimated arbitration contract.

So you think some organizational filler worth approximately nothing is in any way relevant here?

If MAdams is non-tendered that means no team thought he was worth $5M. You can keep questioning it though, and then when he signs for $3M you’ll still argue about it.

If he is non-tendered and signs for 3 million, I would say that 3 million is his fair market value and wouldn't argue with it because I know what words mean.

I'm curious what it is you think is going to happen.

And then what it is you think that will show I'm wrong about.

I don't recall making a prediction.

Of course you didn't. You never do.

Like always, all you did was say I'm wrong when I conclude MAdams has zero trade value and isn't worth $5M (which I've been saying since he was acquired). You claim the fact he is about to be non-tendered isn't proof of his value until he is actually signed.

All you do is be contrarian, never contributing conclusions of your own.

I did not say you were wrong that Matt Adams has zero trade value or that Matt Adams is not worth $5 million dollars.

I do think that his fair market value is determined by the value he gets assigned on the fair market rather than the mere fact that he is non-tendered. It may well be and probably will be less than $5 million. He's more limited than Sean Rodriguez in what he can do for you.
