The Braves have claimed right-hander Chase Whitley off waivers from the Rays, reports Mark Feinsand of MLB.com (on Twitter). Whitley was arbitration-eligible for the first time this offseason and was projected by MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz to earn $1MM.

He's out of options.

Adios Luke Jackson maybe?

(Don't think we can option Winkler yet.)

No we can't and we now have 9 guys who have no options. Mauricio is at least worth looking at in the spring. Jackson has no value. He pitched in the lowest leverage situations all year and still didn't do much. We're back at 40 now. Adams will be gone and a good chance Jace or Santana is non tendered if not both.

Arodys Vizcaino
AJ Minter
Dan Winkler
Sam Freeman
Jose Ramirez
Josh Ravin
Chase Whitley
Mauricio Cabrera
Luke Jackson

This is an easy contract to scuttle if his spring training sucks.

seems like a control guy that might could be a good long guy if he gets the right coaching (well Sh@t)

I wonder if they'll give this guy a chance to start.

The more I looked in to him that started to cross my mind. He has the profile of a starter with his arsenal, but he hasn't pitched that many innings since 2014.

Considering he was used as long relief, I’m sure he has a chance to make a few spot starts.

He’s pretty much Lucas Sims. The Braves already have a Lucas Sims. Odd acquisition.

It is an odd one. I'm hoping they know something and he's identitified as one who could have a good season or two. He's always pitched in the AL East so AA, Minasian, and Tinnish have probably all seen him a decent amount.

He's always had a low WHIP.

Agreed.

Though, I think it’s good to keep in mind that this could simply be AA seeing an arm he likes at the moment that he thinks he can stash in the event they shuffle the roster with other players. If nothing happens, you can always put this guy back on waivers.

Call it the Tyrell Jenkins effect

So we are going to use him to get Sale?

Now that's interesting. Not sure how to interpret "chance to start", but I'm definitely intrigued by Whitley as a long-man type.

Weso was on this.

A lot of cost cutting moves and cheap additions. Hopefully setting up for something other than a $90M payroll.
