Discussion of Braves 2018 Offseason plans

I wouldn't mind a lot if the Braves signed Frazier to a one year deal and I think they have the money to do it. I just wouldn't especially expect it to make much of a difference. I don't particularly enjoy hitters of his profile, but no harm no foul really.

Adding Frazier, imo, would push the Braves into the low 80's win projections for 2018. And in that range you have the possibility of playoffs with a few lucky bounces.

At some price he’s worth it no matter how you project the team.

How they are handling Kazmir’s money is very interesting. If they are setting $8M aside in an account somewhere to essentially count his deferred money in 2018, that means the option is there to use that cash on Frazier and then pay Kazmir’s deferred cash another year.

At what price does Frazier make sense, even for a team most likely out of contention?

I think Matt nailed it...if Frazier comes on a 1 year deal for ~$10M with an option that carries a fairly substantial buy out, the Braves have to jump on it.

To me, Frazier is all about length of contract. I'd even go two years at a reasonable AAV.

As for Adams, I thought there would be some market for him, but it kind of boiled down to the same situation the Braves were in with Kelly Johnson way back when.

That's been my first question since the trade.

That's why I'm also intrigued by taking on Chen's contract to take Yelich. We could get away with paying either $2M or $8M depending on how the payroll dates work in 2018 if we chose to. The flip side of that coin could be why the Marlins are not in a rush to attach him to Yelich right now. They also just paid him 4.5M a few weeks ago and may not feel it's the right time.

Total of $64.5M in 2016-21 salaries is deferred without interest (16:$3M, 17:$4.5M, 18:$8M, 19:$16M, 20:$17M , 21:$16M)
Chen to receive deferred payments of $3M on 11/30/16, $4.5M on 11/30/17, $2M on 11/30/18, $6M on 6/30/19, $4M on 11/30/19, $9M on 6/30/20, $5M on 11/30/20, $15M on 6/30/21, $1M on 11/30/21, $15M on 6/30/22

Signing Frazier could make the Braves a playoff team with some luck in the SP department, which I think we could get.
There would be a lot of "if":

-Freeman stays healthy all year - more wins than last year
-Swanson isn't garbage 80% of the year - more wins
-Teheran is better
-Acuna out-WARs Kemp when he comes up up (fairly safe bet)
-Backend of the rotation improves a lot (McCarthy, Newcomb)
-Bullpen improves

I don't think any of those things are by any means outlandish.
Albies will be a massive upgrade at 2B. Frazier would be a massive upgrade at 3B. Acuna big upgrade over Kemp.

Is there a position that, barring injury, will decline other than probably catcher?

Don't think it will be too hard to improve over Colon from last season. The bullpen needs to be better, trading away Johnson should help there....

Also with the Marlins imploding their roster, they should account for an additional 3 wins plus or minus over last year (we were 11-8 against them in 2017)

Signing Frazier lengthens the lineup and allows you to patchwork LF if you chose to.

I know it may be old school to focus on lineup construction, but going in to the season with FLowers/Suzuki/Markakis as your cleanup hitter just seems like a punt of the season and definitely makes me start to care a little less, so I'm sure it does the casual fan.

I’m not sure how much it’s going to help in the season, but we’re assembling one hell of a triple A squad.

How would you guys feel about us making a run at Gerrit Cole? I feel like he'd be a huge addition. Aside from last year, he's been pretty fantastic.

Looks like he's got two arbitration eligible years left. Sure he's be a nice addition to the staff, but I'm not sure we should give up anything of significant value at this point for 2 years of him, 1 of which likely will be in a year we aren't competitive.

I'd swap Teheran plus for Cole but you are right about the 2 year thing. Wouldnt make sense to take much from our future just for that.

Happy to see this. I like that he can play infield and outfield, and is a switch hitter without significant splits. I guess he will compete with Adonis Garcia for a spot on the bench. Since it is a minor league deal, he can be part of our depth in AAA if Garcia wins the competition. Garcia himself has an option left.

AAA bench is important. It is a long season. Depth is a big thing in the Dodgers organization. AA seems to have absorbed a lot during his time there.
