Around the League: 2017 offseason edition / 2018 Season

Again... my original point is he doesn’t have a good track record building a major league roster. I can’t fathom how you can ascribe his rebuild efforts as just tanking as if that only involves losing games.

Take some time and read up on the Padres rebuild. Preller has done impressive work in the amateur markets.

If a GM is good at acquiring prospects, and then makes terrible moves converting those assets into MLB wins, is he anything other than a bad GM?

Rather than I go do that again, why don't you tell me what you think I'm not aware of.

Which was my point that we agreed on originally. Preller doesn’t have a great track record.

He should get credit though if Tatis develops into a 5 WAR player. I just don’t have faith that he can identify valuable major league talent.

He’s not that unlike Coppolella.

FWIW --- Adonis Garcia is still on 40 man roster

Jace Peterson signed MiLB contract with Yankees

Garcia is playing in Korea and the Braves sold his rights to a team there in December. If he's still on the 40 man roster according to the Braves site then it just hasn't been updated yet.

Actually I read that was the plan but there was some sort of hiccup... I am pretty sure he has not officially been sold to Korea.

Yeah, not a done deal... this is the last I could find.... 12/29

Yeah, that's what I thought too.... just strange that we haven't heard confirmation yet... I can't imagine this would be a big time negotiation.

Thanks for the back up link. To much time has passed for all sites not to get their rosters corrected.

The 40 man roster is full. That's the importance of Garcia still being on it. IF/when the Braves make another trade they'll need yet another open spot. Got lucky with Luke clearing waivers, probably won't get that lucky again.

Indians will keep Kipnis and play him at 2B while Ramirez plays 3B.

That means Yandy Diaz should be available. I would love to see AA identify him as a launch angle change candidate and acquire him.

Solarte for a FV 40 player in A ball who is already going into his age 22 season. That is little more than giving him away. Seems like an easy win for the Jays.

I think the Braves already have Solarte...his name is Camargo.

Man, that is a really light return on Solarte. My opinion on him is probably irrationally high, but still. ~2 WAR player, but I think it's reasonable to value him with a bit of a premium on top of that. Strong defensive versatility and a switch hitter without a huge platoon split. TBH, also pretty captivated by his personal story of being a single father and how he's handled that. Great move by the Jays.

fangraphs is taking forever to post their top prospects per team. at this rate they won't be finished til next offseason.

It really is disappointing. I expected better from Longenhagen.

I imagine this means we will be stuck reading some hack job from Kiley.

Interesting that Eric has only released one more teams top prospects after Killey announced he was coming back to fangraphs. We'll see what happens I guess.

he said in a chat a while back that kiley coming back would probably help get the rankings out faster.
well..

His first article was already nearly unreadable. A rambling mess where he tries to back the "scoutheads" without actually coming out and saying it.

It's not hard to imagine he was basically detailing the conflicts in the Braves FO between the dorks and dinosaurs. The best thing that came out this offseason was cleaning house in the Braves FO.
