Parkland School Shooting

Thus proving how shameful the NRA is.

It was never about the 2nd Amendment. Limbaugh and Co. Were creating this Obama fairy tale monster before both elections that he was going to take away everyone's guns.

Sales skyrocketed through the rough. Ammo and Weapons both.

to your point Hawk:

what a ****ing photo

I disagree. There's a fine line between exploiting the victims and making sure that their stories are told/grief adequately considered.

We just need to start holding ourselves to a higher standard and stop excusing immoral actions.

I'm one of those people that has a morbid fascination with the killers. Dave Cullen's book in Columbine is like the holy grail on that score.

But we don't have to name them, and we don't have to put their faces on TV (or magazines or newspapers). At least not initially. There's got to be a better way.

You talk about human psychology, but take a moment and analyze the other side of that coin. Many of the individuals perpetrating these crimes are bullied or ostracized to the point of psychic break. One of their delusions (which, ironically, isn't that delusional) is their actions will elevate them to a status more popularly remembered than any of the people that once belittled them.

We've gotta stop that.

Mindhunter was also an excellent show. The last scene especially was tense. The problem is even if CNN doesn't post his photo, Alex Jones just has more opportunity to claim conspiracy theory. Or one of his classmates will share their picture in a post.

I believe Trayvon and Zimmerman both got around equal coverage.

You don't believe ideologically Obama would want to ban (or severely limit) gun ownership?

Yes, amen to this.

Each school I went to from Elementary to High had one campus police officer. Only had a handgun not a rifle carried.

Yes though. In less than 24 hours NRA will just call for more guns to protect kids at school.

I think that's about the messenger, not the message.

Seriously, though. This doesn't happen in so-called peer nations. Why does it happen here, and what potential remedies exist?

People mention this a lot, but you're comparing apples to oranges really. The has basically always had signifcantly higher rates of gun ownership than similar countries throughout its history.

But as far as potential remedies, I would agree that some sort of legislation needs to happen.

We had an assault ban 20 years ago.

It passed with many Republicans. It's got nothing to do with Obama or the 2nd Amendment. It has to do with money.

No - It has to do with a legitimate concern that the progressive agenda has been pushing 'gun control' as this vague policy for decades now without actually identifying what it means. Legitimate lawful gun owners have every right to be concerned their second amendment rights will be stripped from them. You can vilify the NRA all you want but actual people have actual concerns based on actual evidence.

When I grew up (when amerika was great) there were no police in the school . Period

Of course though , people of color drank from separate water fountains and we were killing off a generation teenagers through a draft, but, hey ...

The NRA is the lobbying arm of the domestic ammunition industry .

I certainly hope you recognize that

Its this type of logic that has lost you guys elections. You completely ignore that real people have real concerns and for good reasons. You may not understand it but we legal gun owners do not want that right taken from us.

Rep. Jim Himes, whose home state endured Sandy Hook, says there will be a "perfectly predictable" response to Florida's shooting: "People will wish everybody thoughts and prayers ... and then the Congress of the United States will do absolutely nothing." http://cnn.it/2o1D6uW

We have an entertainment industry that unequivocally glorifies guns and violence, as well as a news media that practically idolizes these mass-murderers.

Media, entertainment, video games, unnatural school environments, and irresponsible gun owners all contribute.

I think parenting is the most underrated factor. Both parents are working now in most two parent families, then many of them come home and don't have (or aren't willing to put forth) the energy needed to be involved with their kids. It's much more relaxing to scroll Facebook or binge Netflix while the kid hides in their room with a tablet or smartphone.

I deal with sweet kids all the time who are starved for attention. One of the kids I coached this year was excited after making his first shot in a game. He turned around to see what his parents said and saw both of them looking down at their phone instead. I watched his expression transform from pure joy to complete sadness. Enough of those experiences turn a sweet 5 year old into a cynical 8 year old. I see it happen. What happens when the 5 year old wasn't such a sweet kid? What does that kid turn into when he's 8, or 12, or 15?

do I own a gun ?

Speed traps, DUI checkpoints, and weed arrests pay the bills.

Campus police cost money.

I know. But you would think that less inmates and less pointless court hearings would help to close that a gap a bit.

I'd gladly pay more in taxes if it meant (among other things) the standards for being a police officer were higher and the quality of applicants were better.
