Folty Already Whining...

The fact a team can call itself "file and trial" proves they can negotiate after numbers are submitted. The fact the numbers submitted by both sides are posted on MLBTR weeks in advance proves both sides know what those numbers are.

Imposing the "file and trial" mandate allows the team to weaken the player's overall bargaining position. It is much more costly for a player (both on a financial basis, and a personal basis, as shown in Folty's case) to attend his arb hearing than it is for a team to send a couple lawyers they already have on retainer. Therefore, the player is more inclined to concede his position before the file date than the team is.

It is nothing more than a systematic way to suppress labor wages. All over $100k. The Braves should be ashamed.

The Braves probably use outside counsel for these arbitrations -- they used to use a big name out of California, so rest assured they are paying significant fees to go fight over this money.

You are right that the file and trial is a strategy the Braves have chosen and the intention is almost certainly to pressure players and to depress salary.

I just don't like it was over so little money, but the Braves have always been a team anxious to do their best to keep down player compensation -- thus their old unwillingness to sign above slot.

Just one more reason to long for the days of Ted...Or any single owner really..instead of a faceless corporation that only cares about the bottom line. Its things like this that make you wonder what kinda shape we would be in and where we would be payroll wise if Time warner would have sold to Arthur Blank when he wanted the team.Instead once liberty offered stock back tax free, it was over before the bidding got serious with others....alas, now we wait and hope that one day someone new will come along...

And with Blank owning ATLUFC I don't think he'll be interested in another sports property.

With Glavine having gotten involved with one of the groups that was in on the Marlins, we can always hold out hope that he impressed the money men in that group enough to take a look if Liberty is open to listening - maybe even get Chipper involved.

Not sure that would be an improvement. Glavine is this century's LH version of Don Sutton.

Back in myyyy daaay.....

Get the ball. Throw the ball. Hit the ball.

You are going to need someone with big pockets that is passionate about winning but smart enough to let the team run itself. Something not easily attained.

Folks underestimate just how much meddling owners can hamper a team’s success.

Liberty sets a predictable payroll and let’s the baseball guys make baseball decisions, only stepping in when absolutely necessary. We should be thankful for that I think.

It’s a bit foolish to think a new owner will suddenly spend more on payroll with identical revenue streams, but Braves fans continually spout that nonsense.

Yeah I'm pretty much in the same boat. Sometimes people take the bird in the hand for granted. According to the most recent stat I have (2016) Braves were 16th in Revenue, and 19th in Opening Day Payroll for 2017. Hardly a huge discrepancy especially considering we're not supposed to be a competitive team. For example on the flip side, Philly was 8th in Revenue but 21st in 2017 Opening Day payroll. Sure it would be great having ownership like the Tigers and Jays making almost no money, but it's not like those are 2 model franchises of winning.

We are spoiled from having Ted Turner in the 90s, and conveniently forget the Ted of the 70s and 80s.

It’s not like Turner was a big free-spending maverick with no regard to profit. You have to remember that in the 80s and 90s the Braves has a huge economic advantage due to the Superstation. While the Braves may have shown little or no profit in those days, Turner Broadcastiing surely did, primarily because they filled up 150 nationally broadcast games without having to pay for the broadcast rights. In those days there wasn’t a lot of national baseball broadcast competition and Turner could charge accordingly for nationwide baseball advertising.

What changed is that MLB changes the rules to take this competitive advantage away from the Braves.

What's being missed in my post about "longing" for having guys like Glavine and Chipper involved is exactly that - they're exactly the type of guys that have enough sense to let the people that understand the "new game" have their appropriate say BECAUSE they'd have a personal stake involved. They're cut from the same mold as Jeter - unafraid to take all the flak (and secure enough to take the criticism) for doing what needs to be done, and in an even better situation to be the front men since Braves' fans would come closer to blindly trusting them without an uproar than Marlins' fans trust Jeter.

Braves fans would come much closer to placing the needed faith in Glavine and Chipper than most other former players could hope for - even if they were part of the ownership group buying the franchise they played for. They've both shown me enough personally to make me believe they'd each be fine with being a figurehead rather than a meddling owner.

And the Cubs. Difference is the Chicago media market is way stronger than Atlanta's so the Cubs bounced back quicker.

I would actually like a good book on the Turner years. Any good ones out there that cover the whole era?

Reports on XM today say Braves offered to meet Folty's reps at the midpoint prior to the hearing but were told no. Said it was a point of principle and "he had to win".

I've always felt that the Braves were open to that and it wouldn't surprise me one bit if this is true. Folty gonna Folty. Hopefully he takes that' mentality to the mound and he can be composed if the umps miss a call or an error is made behind him.
