Around the League: 2017 offseason edition / 2018 Season

Guess we will see in the next couple weeks.

I have a hard time seeing how anyone available fits their stated needs any better than Nunez at 2/8

I hope we at least kicked the tires on Nunez. It is likely he preferred to play for a contending team he has already played for. We would have had to top the offer he signed for. But 5/10 would be an offer we should have made imo.

Nunez is going to make $4M in 2018 and has a player option for another $4M in 2019. He can make $1M more from incentives.

The Braves couldn’t beat that offer for a stopgap 3B that can also slide into the corner OF if needed.

I’m not sure they can afford someone like Dickerson or Maybin if they couldn’t afford Nunez.

Did the Braves want Nunez?

I can’t fault the Royals for doing their best to extend their run. They are a small market team with tenuous fan support. They can at least tell them they did everything they could do to win.

The end cost to them is what? They get high draft picks instead of middling prospects for guys on expiring deals?

They start a rebuild a few months later? So what.

If they end up signing Moose to a bargain, they have an asset signed under value that can be flipped or they have a quality player at a reasonable amount of money.

Assuming they have to get rid of everything isn’t necessarily the case. Several ways to go about things.

If they sign Mous they didn’t get him at a bargain. If anyone else wanted him at that price they would have paid it.

I think the Phillies are a dark horse for Moose. Maikel Franco has two plus full seasons under his belt, has yet to put up a WAR better than 1.5, and seems to be regressing. Time is coming to cut bait on him. Imagine Swanson stinks it up this year. Do you think we would be going into 2019 with him as our starting shortstop? That is where the Phillies find themselves with respect to Franco.

i can't see that. they already have a full infield. they could move kingery or hernandez to 3rd.

Most other teams that had 3b options also passed on Nunez. He's not good defensively (something AA reportedly is prioritizing) has injury concerns and will be 31 in June. I have to agree with thethe that I believe there a solid chance Camargo is the better player in 2018.

I would do a sig ibet with someone that jo-gun has a higher War than Nunez. 50 firmly seatbelted me in the Camargo hype train so I am going to ride this puppy out.

economics of baseball stink

It is a sports study of the laws of supply and demand. As teams reduce payroll in hopes of bigger returns next year. Free agents are left unsigned. Since they are still on the market the supply is surprisssing demand and thus trading assets also becomes depressed.

I usually agree with this sentiment but maybe there is an opportunity here.

It is getting late. Relatively little 3b need in baseball. No one wants to give up the draft pick and teams seem to be hoarding money for 2019.

Royals could possibly sign him in depressed market - possibly even to hometown discount— and then trade him without the acquirer forfeiting the draft pick — after teams realize that they aren’t getting premium free agents. Probably will be more teams shopping.

Maybe not. Someone may still pull the trigger.

MLB has made it clear they will not allow such trades to side step the draft pick compensation.
