Around the League: 2017 offseason edition / 2018 Season

Hosmer to Padres according to twitter. No one big name has confirmed, yet.

Morosi- Eric Hosmer has agreed to an 8-year contract with the #Padres that includes an opt-out after 5 years, source says. @MLB @MLBNetwork

If it was 8 years, had to be 23-25 mil a year.

Boras gotta be smiling since JD is a lot better than Hosmer.

Martinez was better before Hosmer signed, and still only has a market consisting of Boston for 5 years and Arizona on a shorter deal. Not sure why that would change now - KC's not suddenly going to join the chase for him.

They could likely bring Moustakas back now though.

Has to be front loaded like the Darvish deal to help coax him towards that opt out, right? How exactly does the SD FO consider giving a player an opt out “creative”?

It’s remarkable that there are still FOs dumb enough to give a 1B a huge deal like this...especially when they aren’t contenders.

Twitter- Sources: Hosmer to #Padres is for 8 years, opt out after 5, front-loaded deal: $20 million each of first 5 years, $13 mil each of last three years, AAV $18 mil.

Figured it had to be front loaded. This seems to be the tactic teams are using to mitigate the risk of the opt out.

5/100 for Hos isn’t a terrible deal, but it is very unlikely he opts out.

If KC does the smart thing and doesn’t sign Mous, they will have 5 of the first 40 picks in the draft. Nailing 3-4 of those picks could really accelerate their upcoming rebuild.
