The DBacks just acquired Souza, and gave up:
Drury (1 win bench IFer)
Banda (FV 50 LHP)
Weidner (fungible pitching prospect)
2 PtbNLs
Seems like a huge price to pay for Souza just because they lost out on JDM.
Rays and Yanks made out well here I think.
Souza is fresh off a 4 WAR season. Plays good defense, knows how to take a walk, and has very good power (which should only increase in AZ) and has another 3 years of control.
Seems like a friggin steal for the D-Backs. They gave up a fringe starting infielder, a pitcher with potential but coming off a down season, another mediocre pitching prospect and a PTBNL.
I’m willing to bet we just saw Souza’s career season, and he will be closer to an average 2 win guy than a 4 win star.

I go to a few games a year here in Reno, and I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that all offensive numbers posted in that park are essentially meaningless. The elevation is 4500’, and the wind is constantly blowing off the Sierra Nevada mountains straight out to RF. Banda is a legit #4 that is MLB ready and possibly represents the best player in this deal...under control for 6 more years.
His power is legit and should. And his defense in RF, while not amazing, has graded out pretty well over his career. Also brings some value on the base paths. The real question is whether or not he can maintain his surge in BB. If he can, then I think he's a legit 3-4 win player as long as he stays healthy and his defense doesn't regress. If not, then you're right, he's probably only 1-2 win player.

The often mentioned Maybin is no longer available. He has signed with the Fish.
O's sign Colby Rasmus to a minor league deal. I'm going to assume that officially closes the book on any hope the O's would take Markakis, and means he will be in a Braves uniform in 2018.
Most likely. I have doubted all offseason we'd be able to move him unless it was to the O's or in some bad contract swap.
Still, this is a minor league contract for Rasmus, so theoretically they could still be a fit.
11 mill isn’t much in today’s dollar. I think we will trade him at the deadline to a contender and pay his salary just to clear a roster spot. He could prove a valuable player to a playoff team. Someone to pinch hit or spot start.

No way we trade him at the break, we will be 4-5 games up
Maybin just signed for $3M with a team that has zero playoff aspirations. That's probably a good comp for Nick's value right now.
