GDT: Braves @ Mets 1st Spring Game

I'm watching the gameday app right now and did we seriously just bat out of order? I saw that happen at the USM game a few nights ago. I thought it was ridiculous that it happened at the college level, but in the MLB?!?!

Only thing usm did wrong all weekend

I think the real question here is how high is Lane Adam's ceiling. He is obviously fast. He flashed some power last year. If he can figure out his hit tool and his defense he may be the modern version of Willie Mays. I don't want to get carried away and say that he is going to be Willie Mays, but don't be surprised if he ends up being Andre Dawson or somewhere in between....

SJ24?

Did pache or Riley have any challenging defensive plays?

Pache got burned playing very shallow on the two run double, Diddler booted a DP ball just before hand at second and the Mets later took the lead on another error ruled a hit that hit right inside Wilson's glove in left and bounced right out. The official scorers were very inconsistent, though I do think they changed an earlier play ruled an error to a hit in order to justify giving the Mets hits that inning on easier plays. That said, Pache also had an RBI hit and base running mistake. Riley walked his only AB on an inside 3-2 pitch.

Gomez and Brothers looked great, both had very good velocity with Gomez topping out at 98 mph and Brothers hitting 96 mph multiple times.

It has been speculated that high velocity increases the risk of injury.

Wisler at 90

Whitley at 87

Allard at 89

The Braves are simply exploiting the newest market inefficiency. If none of your pitchers throw hard, none will get hurt!

I don't expect them to average that velocity in the regular season if healthy, Whitley average fastball velocity was 90.4 last season and higher the year before. I expect about the same and like him as a bullpen piece.

Just rewatched the parts of the game I missed

Brothers looked good controlling a 95-96 fastball and keeping the breaking ball down. He should be in the BP with Freeman and Minter as LHers.

Allard was very underwhelming, even more so than I gathered from the comments here. No control over an 89 fastball. Gave up a walk and a rocket to RF that was miraculously turned into 2 outs by a great play. Then a warning track fly ball to Gonzo end the inning. It’s clear why he has tumbled down prospect lists.

Riley’s walk was on mostly non competitive pitches. I’m no swing mechanics guru, but his first move as he loads his hands is to point the head of the bat at the pitcher. That bat wrap could be a contributing factor to the “long swing” comments.

The most impressive players in the first game were Albies, Freeman, Gomez and Brothers. I was extremely disappointed in what Whitley showed.
