Who will be the Braves 3b opening day?

Any shot it’s chrisitan colon or Peterson?

Camargo, Ruiz, Riley haven’t done anything special this spring

Have to go Ruiz, of that group, should Camargo’s injury complicate things. Or else outside the org.

The Braves passed on several affordable players at 3b to keep the position open for Riley and to see what they have with Camargo. Nothing that has happened over the course of 33 ST PAs changed that plan.

Unless he’s injured, Camargo has to be the favorite for 3b.

This is how I know the team isn't expecting to compete this year. How many times have the Braves gone into the season with such a huge hole on their roster in years they actually intended on trying to make the playoffs? I think the FO knows we're at least a year away and so doesn't feel any particular motivation to fill that hole.

Garcia was a huge hole. Camargo will be over a 2-win player imo

This is where I am exactly. Time to find out if some of these guys are 25 man roster worth. Camargo, Ruiz (doubtful), Peterson, etc...

Quite a bit actually. Lets not forget we made the playoffs with the rotting corpses of Mondesi and Jordan in the corner outfield. I like that we are giving the young players a shot at the position. I know its always a long shot for us to sign big free agents but we are well positioned to make those moves next year with a potential banner year for free agents. Its not uncommon for teams to make a big splash move to signal to fans that rebuilding time is over. Nats made that move with Werth. etc.

Riley actually had a very good first spring camp but it's too early and he's already been reassigned. Camargo has been fine... just not spectacular. At least he has still been showing some of his new power. I don't see why he wouldn't be the starter as he was the sole reason we didn't acquire anyone else. Ruiz is garbage.

Peterson can't play third.

I think Nick Esasky wants another shot. Heck maybe TP since he is not coaching anywhere that I know of.

Some of our best teams had pretty big holes...

Ended up with big holes? Sure. But usually we'd go into the season with at least a plan.

People point to Mondesi in 2005 but there was a legitimate plan there. It's easy to forget that Mondesi was only a season removed from being a decent player. He hit .272 with an .827 OPS and 24 HRs in 2003. He was pretty bad in 2004 but it wasn't a bad play at all to sign him for a million bucks, put him in right, hope that he bounces back, and have Kelly Johnson waiting in the wings in case he doesn't.

The best I can tell, our only plan for third base this year is to just hope that a utility player steps up.

Santana could also play some third if needed while Camargo rests his back. I don't see Peterson as an option at third and Ruiz isn't good enough to be starting in MLB. Ruiz wouldn't even be on my bench at this point.

Tbh, I think hoping a likely utility player surpasses expectations is more of a “real” plan than hoping Mondesi would bounce back / replicate 2003 ...
