GDT: 4/13/2018 Cubs

The farm system was bottom 1-3 in baseball once he got fired, you gonna deny this?

No.

I also recognize that the MLB club had about 7 young and cheap stud assets.

You gonna deny this?

The Cubs system is dry now too.

It's what happens when you graduate a ton of players and are tasked with winning

Can you imagine how fun it will be to possibly be buyers at the deadline??

The fact we can even talk about the possibility being possible is awesome.

That tends to happen when players are promoted and you have the best collection of young talent at the MLB level.

Jog my memory:

Freeman
Heyward
Teheran
Medlen
Beachy
Minor
Kimbrel
Prado (Main piece for Upton)
Drury (Piece for Upton)

Which scouting director brought in those guys?

Simmons/Gattis/Wood for sure. That was his scouting director. Credit for the great bullpens he put together. Credit for the Upton trade.

Did I miss anything?

Acuna and Albies

Camargo, who you seem rather fond of...but maybe you will change your mind since he came in under Wren.

Yeah. As a fan, all I really want is for my team to be playing meaningful games in September. Anything else is gravy.

Happy to be winning but kind of feels like smoke and mirrors right now. How long can we get winning contributions from Tucker, Flaherty's, Bourjos the other night, Anibal today. Hoping that when the pixie dust runs out from those players, we have the fire power from the minors coming to fill the gaps.

Do you deny wren built a winning team over 5 years with a meh payroll? Yet that means he was a disaster?

Nah - Love Camargo.

But again - The GM in the modern structure of a MLB organization has little to do with anything outside of major league personnel changes.

Some of it is smoke and mirrors (Tucker and Flaherty in particular). But we also have one of our best players (Inciarte) getting off to a poor start. Our main catcher is out. Ditto our third baseman. We have some young players maybe taking a big step forward (Albies, Swanson, Folty, Newcomb). We have some potentially very strong contributors in AAA (Acuna, Soroka and Gohara).

So when you weigh it all, it is not hard to see this as a promising start to the season.

You keep saying it, but that doesn't make it so. The GM (certainly in the structure the Braves had in place when Wren was GM) picks pretty much all the key people involved in amateur talent acquisition and provides them with supervision and guidance. Right now AA is doing the same thing. He will get credit/blame for how the major league team does AND how the farm system evolves.

Totally get it. I'm just not at the point where I can see us being buyers and this being a playoff team. The main concern being the volatility of the starting rotation. For now, I'll just enjoy the ride.

Umm, they ban the Braves from drafting players once those players got promoted or no?

Im not sure i'd call it pixie dust.

But you have Flowers replacing Perez, Acuna replacing Bourjos and having Tucker off the bench, Camargo replacing Flaherty, and Soroka, Gohara coming up to the bigs. Rotation is still my biggest worry.

Effects where we pick. Also braves had a huge run of bad luck to promising pitchers. **** happens but calling wren a disaster is a joke. Coppy was the disaster.
