Braves sign Bautista

Swap them around? One is going to pitch the 8th, the other the 9th. Does it matter which one pitches which inning?

As long as they are deployed with platoon advantages considered, it doesn't matter which inning they pitch.

True. Good point. Just make sure Snit knows.

We have been stockpiling high risk - high end arms in the minors. Along with some starters landing in the pen, I don’t see a major need. Could likely upgrade on Viz with Minter though. Swap em around

We may have but the Sims, Ravins of the world, aint gonna cut it.

Pending cost, getting a controllable BP arm would make some sense.

The problem is, the usual deadline cost for BP arms means such deals almost never make sense.

if we are in the hunt upgrading 3B should be a priority. my whole premise for the idea was that he should be cheap.

BP arms are the riskiest investment long term and the most expensive at the deadline. Especially on a team that has arms for days. You could potentially break in a guy like Soroka as a stud pen arm for a playoff run if you so desired and the control piece worked out.

I do not believe in RF/Comargo/Bautista. Would be very happy to be wrong.

MLBTR recently posted an article that talks about how the organization is planning to use Bautista as the main 3B. I agree with you that I dont expect any of the 3 of them to pan out long term, but man what a kick in the pants tp Flaherty. Dude has been raking, and is being demoted to spot starts and maybe utility IF.

Think you have to consider acquiring Flaherty, Culberson, and Bautista as something of a lack of confidence in Camargo, which is an entirely reasonable thing to lack.

I think Bautista’s price simply dropped when no one signed him and the Braves were willing to promise him a quick path to the majors if he looked ok in his acclimation. AA just keeping his word there.

I don’t think it’s that big a risk. Trading a few Camargo/Flaherty at bats for a look at a potential middle order bat isn’t a big deal. While he may be done, he’s only a year removed from being useful.

Yea, I’m not even saying I agree with the new regime (though I’ve never been as high on Camargo as others), but it does seem pretty clear Anthopoulos isn’t bullish on Camargo as a regular.

Is there a collective agreement that Bautista is going to be really horrible?

I'm going to take a wild guess and say he's pretty much just Matt Kemp, but AA legit seems confident in him. Unlike Coppy, I tend to believe AA's gut instincts.

Reading the comments there, damn, is that place ever an idiot feasting ground.

Yeah. Forget even being able to play third. I have doubts he can even hit major league pitching.

I don't think so. I don't think they are going to move the MLB leader in hits for someone who cannot hit.

The sad thing is we are trying to piece together some way to get 2 WAR out of 3B. And I have other threads were people are saying it's a terrible idea to get Moose if he's a cheap get.

Even when he sucked he still got on base 100 points over his average. He is two years from an 817 OPS. Last year it was 674. I don't think a 750 OPS is crazy for him. Before this year Ryan Flaherty's best OPS was 683. Crazy babip comargo was only 780.

Sure it sucks on a personal level but wasn't he signed after Camargo was injured? Pretty sure he knew the deal when agreeing to terms.

Give the front office credit for making the effort to find a player to fill in. What could have been small improvement turned out to be the 5% outcome.

Well Bautista is quite likely to suck hard. But it's worth noting unlike Kemp he's only like 2 years removed from a top 10 MVP vote season.

That being siad, that was in RF. Not 3B where his defensive numbers are brutally bad.

This. He is Brian Jordan all over again, only eating up PT as a favor from administration.

Camargo and Flaherty combining to put up elite 3b production on offense and very good defense. And yet we've decided to make Bautista the starter at 3b when he's hitting a buck fifty at AAA and looking sluggish (a compliment) defensively?

I'm all for adding Bautista to the bench. He'd make a terrific RH power bat off the bench. And I'd be down to start him occasionally to give someone a rest. But from what I've seen so far, I don't know that he even should be a starter for a minor league team.
