Around Baseball - 2013 Postseason GDT Edition

Or taking on a similarly bad contract.

I think Uggla to the AL has some potential.

Some ideas

Uggla for Beckett - Net savings for the Braves of about 9M Dodgers get a much safer bet as Beckett has been hurt all the damned time.

Then of course there's the potential of just pawning him off on a team. Say Detroit loses Infante in FA, then Uggla and some cash for nothing could work but Detroit wouldn't take back too much cash.
I assume you mean Josh Beckett. Then who plays 2nd for us. Please dont say LaStella. No one seems to value him other than forum posters.

There are plenty of possible second base options for us, including Pastornicky (though maybe only in a platoon role). Pena should be back too, so maybe he plays some second along with Pastornicky. Infante is a free agent and the Angels are looking to trade their second basemen, etc.

I'd try packaging Uggla in a trade for Howie Kendrick since the Angels want to move him. They are interested in pitching and we have pitching we could use in a trade.

Pastornicky is not a starting player in MLB. Pena caught a slightly larger bolt of lightening than EJohnson. Infante is a good player, does not fill a true need for us in that he cannot leadoff. kendricks would be a good pick up but then which of the young pitchers are you willing to give up for him.

Ideally Profar or Scooter Gennett fill the bill for me. Im sure that there are others.

I certainly disagree about Infante, he might not be who we want leading off. But he can play multiple positions, similar to Prado. So he would be a good pick-up if the cost were not bad. However, I'm afraid he'll cost more than he's worth. As far as trading for Kendrick, it depends on if they'll take Uggla in the deal and how much cash since I'd expect they'd want some of the difference paid too.

We are not necessarily looking for a leadoff hitter. Heyward can fill that role for another year.

We are also not necessarily looking for a "starting player in MLB," whatever that his. The main objective is to improve at second. It is not that tall an order. This team won 96 games. It can afford to have modest goals when looking to upgrade second. My personal preference is to have a competition in spring training between the internal options. If no one fills the bill, make a mid-season trade.

I basically agree with you, but I'd still consider a trade with the Angels if they'll consider Uggla along with pitching in the package for Kendrick.

You really think tha the Angels will take on ANOTHER bad contract. Their stated goals this winter is to get young, affordable pitching.

Dont you think that that is a waste of Heywards talents all things considered?

Not at all. With Heyward at leadoff, one of the Braves' best hitters is receiving the highest proportion of team PAs, and it moreover prevents Fredi from slotting seemingly more conventional "leadoff-type hitters," who are actually demonstrably worse offensive producers, at the top of the lineup.

The Angels front office is not particularly astute and we might be able to take advantage of them. But to make that a fair trade, we'd have to include a pretty good prospect. Someone like Bethancourt, Peraza or Cabrera.

Heyward can fill that role for as long as he's a Brave.

Personally we should give La Stella a chance. I know some say the Braves don't think he can hack it at second but I don't believe that. If they didn't think he coudl hack it there they'd have moved him or would be talking about moving him or something. I think people are reading too much into him not getting a callup in September. when I think roster considerations and playing time were the biggest considerations. You saw Bethancourt barely get used same would have happened with La Stella. he'll get a crack at impressing in ST.

Come spring training, it might be a free-for-all involving Pena, La Stella, Pastornicky, Elliot Johnson. And just maybe Dan Uggla.

The details don't matter as much as the club adopting the mindset that it is a truly open competition.

They seem to be interested in pitching more than position players. So I doubt Bethancourt or Peraza would be needed. However, I'd expect they'd welcome such solid prospects in any deal (same as anyone else).

They might in a package that includes young, affordable pitching. They want to trade Kendrick who makes 9 million or so a year. So depending on the cash involved a deal including Uggla along with pitching might be possible.

Yeah, now an interesting and certainly unpopular idea is (follow me here) Uggla and Medlen for Kaleb Cowart, Maronde, Randal Grichuk, and Taylor Lindsay. ALl 4 are intriguing prospects and losing Medlen would sting massively but this deal would free up about 20 million in salary considerations which lets me do the next 3 moves and gives us much more important Minor league depth. Cowart is a future 3B contender, struggled in 2013, but a switch hitter who handles third well gives us a long term prospect for 3B. Maronde is a live arm. Grichuk is OF depth, just incase Heyward or Justin leave. Lindsey is really interesting, would basically be competition for La Stella, etc.

Keep Mac Gattis moved to super sub/masher off the bench and can be bait if we need to make a move

Keep Hudson

Sign Halladay/JJ as a pray for the best type could work out or not. Just a 1 year incentive laden deal.

So the 2014 Braves would be

RF - Jason
LF - Justin
1b - Freddie
C - Mac
3B - CJ
SS - Simmons
CF - Bossman
2B - La Stella/Lindey/Pastor, etc.

Rotation

Minor
Julio
Hudson
JJ/Halladay
Wood

Pen - same as this year, keep one of EOF or Venters to replace downs.

I'd do that deal. However, do you really think the Angels would give us that much in return with Uggla included in the deal?

Well they're getting Medlen, a cheap starter who is better than any pitcher on the market. Maybe we'd hav eto pull one of them who isn't Cowart or Lindsey off there. But I think Medlen is worth Uggla's salary and 4 very good not elite prospects.
