FRIDAY MINORS REPORT 6/29: Zimmermann has dazzling AA debut

If you need another reason to into July feeling optimistically nervous, take a minute to check out AA's history with draft picks. We know more than one person is involved with the signing process, but remains true that we go into July with ***three*** key draftees still unsigned. At least three of them have indicated that they were more than willing to sign, which begs a further question: are we low-balling them?
And if so, why? Did we not save enough money with the picks we have signed?
Deadline is ONE WEEK from today.

Really interested to see Zimmermann against age-appropriate competition - while it is tough to say we've got a "surplus" just yet, if he maintains anything close to his previous performance level and Weigel is healthy it will start to get tougher to challenge some of these guys during the second half of the season. Some of that ought to shake itself out over the winter with Wisler, McCarthy, and Anibal gone, but even if all 2019 rotation replacements come from within (Soroka, Gohara, Fried, Allard, Wright), it's still going to be pretty crowded in Gwinnett and Mississippi if you only move the rest of the arms one level at a time.

I realize the naysayers use the "I'll worry when we start losing guys in the Rule V Draft", but we're getting closer to that point than you think - Weigel, Touki, A-Jax, and Josh Graham all have to be added this winter.

I don’t think you have to worry about Jackson or graham and the rule 5 draft. No one is going to carry them on an active roster for a full season. Touki is a possibility because of his upside but it would still be risky to have him on an MLB roster all season. So the worry over rule 5 still isn’t apparent yet.

I think they’ll have to protect Toussaint.

I think they’ll have to protect Toussaint.

Touki is the exact type of arm teams are willing to stash on the 25 man roster.

The Braves will protect him, and they will have no issue finding space on the 40 man roster to do so.

This whole "trade pitchers due to the log jam" narrative is pure silliness perpetuated by the same ignorant people that have consistently proven they have no idea what they are talking about. They are literally wrong all the time, yet folks still entertain their dumb ideas as topics of conversation.

It was an unconvincing article, for sure. Lucas Sims is not a log-jam for any real prospect; and we already saw the FO act similarly with Aaron Blair, clearing him from the 40 but buying some goodwill for a minor-league deal should he rehab to health.

Those dudes just want the Braves to make a move to improve the roster.

The Braves do actually have a lot of pitching prospects and probably should reallocate their resources to some degree, but it’s not because any of them are in danger of not getting enough appearances.

If someone is dominating they’ll be advanced when the time is right.

It isn’t going to kill anyone to spend a full season at a level.

Agree on all points.
