Around the League: 2017 offseason edition / 2018 Season

Strange they would say Nats have underachieved.

They haven’t won in postseason but winning 95 games as they usually have done isn’t really underachieving.

Spoken like a true Braves fan, I know. Still.

Dave Martinez' genius-level abilities must have abandoned him when he left Chicago.

Given the hype surrounding Harper (will be better than Trout) and Strasburg (best pitching prospect in decades with perfect mechanics so no injury risk) and the money spent surrounding them they certainly haven't overachieved.

They've won 95 games and the division in 4 of the last 6 years. They had a winning record in the other two. Off the top of my head they had injuries come into play the two times they missed.

I think that's probably a reasonably consistent performance.

They only won 79 games in 2015.

The point is that they haven't lived up to the hype.

They've certainly performed when it hasn't counted. That said, they've been an even worse flop in the postseason than the Braves were during the run. With dominant starting pitching, seldom any pen weaknesses, and offenses with few holes, the fact that they've not advanced any further than they have has to be looked at as a disappointment if you're in the camp that the 90's/00's Braves should have accomplished more.

Like you said - it's not anything to be ashamed of. I do think I'd be pretty disappointed if I were a Gnats fan though.

They won the division. That’s living up to the hype to me.

But as a fan I’d be disappointed that I didn’t have a title. They are built for it. But wouldn’t call it underachieving.

I wouldnt say they overachieved, and i wouldnt say they underachieved, been a little unlucky if anything.

Probably should have beaten the Cards in 2012, Dodgers series in 15 was a tough beat as well, Scherzer vs Rich Hill, lose. Last year vs the Cubs, big lead, lost. Will be interesting what they do Tuesday or by the waiver deadline.

Nationals sending out feelers on Harper. Am I the only one who thinks it is absurd the idea that the Nats are just now sending out feelers on Harper? If I'm a GM I would have sent out feelers before the season even began and certainly well before the trade deadline. Teams have to know what it will take to get Harper. Nats just need to be willing to make the tough call.

Totally with you on this: it’s a real lack of due-dillgence, despite expectations for their team. As much as I loathe the Zombie Expos, their front office has put together a damn solid team the last half-decade or so; but their whole 2018 heretofore reeks of over-confidence seasoned with under-preparedness. Not yet having, at minimum, “sent out feelers” vis-à-vis Harper trades—even if they decide against any such move—is emblematic.
