2018 Trade Deadline ROSTERBATION

Morosi says Padres losing momentum for Archer. We are the only other team consistently mentioned with him. I wouldn't be surprised if we trade for Archer today, as much as I'm not that excited about it.

If we're adding Allard to the 25 man roster and 40 man roster today that puts us at 27 on the 25 man roster including Duvall. I'd think Michael Reed and Luke Jackson would be the odd men out.

Adding Duvall and Allard to the 40 man while taking off Sims, Wisler, and Tucker means we'd have one spot left on the 40 man.

I feel like there will be a handful of moves made today.

Yeah, really dumb of Preller if true, but I'm sure he's feeling the heat to win now. Don't envision him lasting more than 1 more losing season. He's had long enough to accrue and develop talent for the major league team. All they have to show for it right now is... a good 1b that they have playing LF for some reason. May be Christian Villar could be a good role player. They have some nice prospects, obviously but it's unlikely they become a contender in 2018 without a major overhaul of their major league team.

If we managed to get Archer for a package centered around Gohara and could keep Soroka, Touki, Wright, Anderson, Contreras, and Pache, I'd be okay with it. I'm not against Archer as he's a pretty good pitcher who is controllable at a decent price. I just don't want to trade away someone who turns into a stud and have Archer collapse in a year.

The Braves and Philles weren't supposed to be contenders this year either.

I think the Padres are at least a year behind the Braves and Phillies in breaking in their top level of prospects.

They look like a 2020 play to me though why the hell they have 40+ million tied up in Will Myers and Hosmer at that point, I surely have no idea.

....

I'm not surprised the Phillies are over .500, particularly after they opened their wallets a bit.

The Braves are something of a surprise, but its really been more of many things going well within the high range of expectation than something unforeseen (Albies power barrage aside, he was expected to be good in a different way).

I think both the Braves and Phillies were ahead of what the Padres will be next year in breaking in young players. I don't anticipate the Padres will start many clocks this September.

guys like Chacin and Anibal Sanchez are there to be signed every year

sure, they would just have archer and then a bunch of guys like that. i'd be far more shocked at success for them next year than i am about our success this year.

If they can add Mejia, Urias, and Tatis to Margot, Hosmer, and Myers that's a good squad.

Hosmer has been below replacement level. Myers is an above average hitter. Margot had not made much progress in his second season.

Asking multiple prospects to breakout at the major league level their first time around the league is a big ask.

They don't have much to help the rotation.

2019 doesn't seem feasible to me. Nothing Preller has done at the major league level has made much sense to me at any point in his career. He's done a decent job of losing and accumulating assets. Which is hardly the hardest part of being a GM.

Romo and archer... not sure I wanna pay the price tag, but I feel it would guarantee a playoff spot. Well sssuming we get a decent replacement for flaherty.

Wonder if making the playoffs would help AA get more payroll this offseason.

I would agree Peller is on the hot seat. He came in his first year and spent alot of money and made several trades to win now but failed. He's spent the last few years trying to rebuild what he wasted in the beginning. Plus didnt he get suspended for a rules violation?

The Padres getting Archer now would be just as dumb as the Braves getting him 12 months ago. SPs are win now moves, and SD is not going to win now.

Archer to the Braves has a chance to be a very good move if AA can put together a quantity over quality package. The Braves are perhaps the one team most able to absorb losing multiple 50s without setting them back much.

The fact the Rays just got their controllabe OFer from the Cards only improves the Braves chances of landing Archer because thats the piece the Braves couldn’t provide in a package for Acher.
