Joe Simpson’s Saturday Night Rant

He blasted the professionalism of Roberts' players and questioned the integrity/legitimacy of one of Rizzo's players. You don't think that is worth defending?

He's one random announcer expressing his opinion. Honestly, it's crazy that Roberts and Rizzo even care what he says. If I'm Roberts or Rizzo and I'm asked about Simpson's comments, I ask the reporter why I'm supposed to care about the opinions of the announcer of an opposing team.

If the Nats announcers questioned Acuna's age I'd find it hilarious. If a Dodgers announcer criticized Acuna and Albies' bromance as unprofessional I'd just laugh. I couldn't care less what those guys think.

I think Roberts was being an oversensitive baby but I honestly think Simpson hit a nerve with the Soto comment. The comment was so innocuous that it had to be an area Rizzo was sore about. Either there are rumblings around baseball about Soto's age that haven't fully surfaced in the public or Rizzo himself is concerned and so overreacted. If there were zero concerns about Soto's age I think Rizzo would have laughed and used the comment as a chance to say how special Soto is.

You're also not the manager of the team who is around those guys every day and has to have their respect. For all you know, they may have simply felt the need to do it to gain that respect for having their players' backs.

Why are you so upset about them being so upset? Why do you care what they say?

If Snit or Anthopoulos had said that stuff, sure, I understand Roberts or Rizzo getting upset about it, but an commentator? Their job is to talk continuously for 2+ hours about one of the most boring sports. Everyone is offended by anything these days.

For once I'd like to see someone like Joe come back to the media and say "Yeah, I said that, not sorry about it. So what?"

Folks are just tired of hearing old announcers who are stuck in the past gripe about the new generation of players and fans.

"Age fraud hasn’t been a thing in Latin America in nearly a decade. But then again Joe Simpson is stuck in the past, so it’s not a surprise that he proffers this sort of garbage. Ignore it."

"the ability of broadcasters to try to make baseball as unenjoyable as possible is unfathomable."

"Baseball, whether it be teams or national telecasts, would do well to employ more people who actually seem to enjoy the game and the young players it is littered with today."

Just fire Simpson already. Nobody wants to listen to a grumpy old buffoon too stupid to realize he's stupid for 3 hours.

I'm just tired of people getting butthurt whenever anyone expresses an opinion they don't like. I think free and open debate is a healthy thing. People getting their feelings hurt and demanding an apology at the drop of a hat leads to self censorship. It's a pet peeve of mine.

I think Passan's comment that age fraud hasn't been a thing in a decade is a but naive. Whenever you're talking about that kind of money, you're going to have fraud. There's nothing that makes baseball special. It seems he's just forgotten about the possibility that the fraudsters might have gotten more sophisticated and harder to catch.

Saying that age fraud hasn't been a thing in a decade would be like saying that steroids haven't been a problem since the days of Bonds and McGuire. Cheating will always be a thing.

Well done. You have very succinctly summarized the problem with the US today with a single post, perfectly describing the anti-intellectual wave sweeping over the uneducated masses.

"My ignorant opinion is just as valid as your educated opinion".

No, ignorant opinions are not as valid as educated opinions. This is proven by the fact that zero MLB FOs are run by folks with ignorant opinions about baseball. In fact, nobody is paid for their ignorant opinions on matters...because they are useless.
Oh so you are gonna take my degree away from me then? That's ok my journalism degree and minor in history doesn't hurt you at all.

Yes, every journalism major I’ve met is a real brainiac.

By “ignorant” and “uneducated” I was refering specifically to baseball analytics. I’m not at all surprised someone with a watered done writing degree can’t grasp the concepts behind advanced analytics. I’ve honestly never seen anyone tout a minor as proof of anything though.

I’ll stand by my point that ignorant opinions are not equal to educated opinions.

I'm gonna take the pendulum way the other way on this Joe Simpson thing. I hope he goes on a rant about hats with flat bills today and it ruffles everyone's feathers.

Fitting time to poke back in! Welcome

LOL! I will try and poke in every once in awhile. I started a business 1.5 years ago and have zero time to screw off at work anymore. I have seen about 6 innings total all year.

But, I don't need to watch games, I have stats!

EDIT: Simpson is an idiot. Its one thing to be old school, it's another to be ignorant. You are implying a lot of things when suggesting a player lied about his age (both with the player and the organization) And the Dodger thing.....WTF dude? I have a feeling he doesn't last past this year.

Joe didn't seem to have a problem with the Cubs' RP who wears his hat crooked to honor his dad who fished for a living.
