MURPHY TO THE CUBS

OH MY

Maybe La Stella will become available. He should still be our starting 2B in the first place. :Alone:

PS--Matt Adams to the Cardinals. No word as to whether the Cardinals traded for Odorizzi first and then flipped him for Adams.

Rays got Shane Baz as PTBNL in the Archer deal.

So Glasnow, Meadows and Baz for Archer

Ahhhh, no thanks on that deal......

Nats-Phillies seems slightly slanted towards the Nats in the pitching matchups:

Velaquez v Roark
Eflin v. Strasburg
Nola v. Scherzer (hell of a matchup)

be the spoiler, Nats.

Probably gonna depend on Game 1, and which Strasburg shows up.

Nola/Scherzer is must watch TV though.

Nats offseason will be rather interesting.

They have alot of guys expiring, but also some money to spend and alot of holes. Wonder if they move Robles for a piece to contend next year.

They are teetering really close to being in that limbo area between competing and tanking. In my opinion, if they can't resign Bryce, they should probably do a tear down. Keep Soto, Turner, and Robles, trade as many of your high value guys as you can. They could get some serious value out of guys like Scherzer, Taylor, Rendon, Doolittle, Strasburg, etc... Without Bryce and some others they are losing, I just don't see them as a serious contender next year. It'd be best to get as much future value as they can and try to do a 2-3 year rebuild. The Soto, Turner, Robles trio is a really good group to build around.

what kind of young pitching do they have? a quick search through my memory isn't getting many results.

I don't think a tear down will be necessary, unfortunately for us. They've got some great hitting prospects near major league ready in their minors, including Robles and Kieboom (brother of their backup catcher). They have a +78 run differential this year, but for whatever reason just haven't put it together. They have a decent core in place already with Scherzer and Strasburg, along with Soto, Rendon, and Turner. I don't know how much money they have to spend, but it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

they're still gonna have to pony up for pitching or have some random guys emerge from the minors.

They'd do good to trade Rendon while he still has good value. I doubt he'll be an every day player in 3 years. Signing Strasburg to that huge deal was a big mistake. They'd have to eat serious money to trade him. Would be been better off letting him walk and using that money to give Harper whatever he wanted.

They should either have a fire sale, or trade Robles and others for a stud and go all in for the next 2-3 years. Stras and Scherzer have may be 2-3 more years before major decline and the Nats don't have much beyond that with very little help on the way in the pitching department.

he has been trying to figure out how to get FF past waiver wires in a trade with someone....

Well, obviously a trade of FF now isn't going to happen. The team has come together, mainly around remarkable performances and improvements by the new guys, the pitching and a miraculous walk year performance out of neck. I also expected a bigger decline out of the catching duo. So, hurrah Braves. It does happen. The stars do align.

Even with that trading Freeman, still wouldn't be the worst idea in the world given the right return. I know, I know....MVP, blah, blah.

Freeman is really good. No question. And he may win the MVP, but I doubt it as he has cooled significantly, especially in the power department. I think a strong argument can be made that he's not even the best player on the Braves right now, but Acuna is.

IF you could swing a trade with the Astros in the offseason where you send Freeman for Whitley, Tucker and Alvarez, I think long term that deal would make sense. You are moving Freeman's money, which allows more payroll flexibility and getting back one of the top OF prospects in baseball, a true #1 starter prospect and a longer term 1B/OF guy who in 2-3 years may be the next Freeman. Freeman is just what Houston needs because they are several years into their window. The Braves are starting their window but by the time they are in the middle, Freeman will either be gone or diminished by age in all likelihood.

In the mean time what's better: A Duda/Reynolds short term 1B platoon for $10M combined, plus Whitley, Tucker & Alvarez (plus whatever the extra $12M in payroll flexibility brings) OR Freeman at $22M per year on the backside of his peak?

I know what I'm saying is blasphemy since many are player centric instead of team centric. I also know that Freeman probably sells a lot of merchandise (but I would be willing to bet that Acuna could be marketed into that position).

Freddie Freeman's slash line by month in 2018...

Apr: .314/.437/.559 (.995 OPS)
May: .355/.433/.518 (.951 OPS)
June: .277/.348/.545 (.893 OPS)
July: .315/.364/.500 (.864 OPS)
Aug: .346/.429/.526 (.954 OPS)

Freeman has not "cooled significantly". He has been the model of consistent excellence this season...and for the last few seasons.

Freeman is going to post a 6+ fWAR season, will be a strong contender for MVP, and is considered one of the most valuable assets in the sport.

This ridiculous narrative suggesting the Braves would be better off trading Freeman under any scenario while in contention for a play off spot is completely and utterly absurd.
