Around the League: 2017 offseason edition / 2018 Season

Aren't you glad we didn't trade for Quintana? Getting lit up by brewers today. His era is 4.48, and FIP was 4.63 entering today.

Pitt is so dumb. I hope AA is taking notes and abuses them this winter. They paid WAY too much for Archer.

It was a lot before Baz. Adding a top 15 pick and high upside pitcher is just overkill. No wonder AA kinda insinuated that we weren't in on Archer that late and had zeroed in on GasMann earlier than the media thought.

I'm glad they haven't paid a premium for any declining arm, and I hope they continue that strategy.

On this board the name changes, but the narrative is always the same: "Let's trade for a TOR arm!!"

And it's always a bad idea...

Another SP many around here wanted to pay full retail for in terms of prospects, even when the team wasn't competitive.

Are we starting to see why these trades are a bad idea?

I'm honestly flabbergasted that they ALSO sent Shane Baz over in the deal. In my opinion, that is almost a Miller level fleecing on the Rays part. Good for them for getting full value plus some out of Archer. I thought the PTBNL would be just some guy in low A or something.

I think the true dumb part is not just what they sent but when they sent it. They basically sold off this past winter for prospects and then let a big win streak trick them into thinking they have a good club so then they sold better prospects to replace players they sold this winter. Just dumb. No one outside of a few dummies in the Pitt FO think they have any real shot this season.

The Pirates were constantly criticized for not adding to the good teams anchored by Cutch in his prime. Rightfully so, imo. Those were legit teams.

Now they dump prospects for a declining Archer months after selling away Cole.

Truly mindbogglingly dumb. I hope Pirates fans realized they finally got what they asked for, and now I doubt they like it.

I was against trading for Archer and posted saying he would cost too much and that he is overrated IMO. Pittsburgh gave up what Archer was worth a few years ago, not now IMO. But I am sure Pittsburgh thinks they can fix him since they gave up so much. Time will tell on that.

I figured it might be someone good like him by the way they were reporting the third player being a key piece to the trade.

Good point about Cole as he's a better pitcher than Archer.
