Pretty sure bWAR looks at what actually happened, whereas fangraphs looks at what should have happened (more predictive)
Pretty much. When I get serious about player evaluation for pitchers I usually split the difference of the two.

So would you then say Gausman has been about as valuable as Archer, over the last three seasons?
Sure. Going forward I think you would always value archer due to his stuff but at some point results on the field matter.
I could easily see gausman outperforming archer the next couple of years. I could also see archer totally dominate the nl
Like I've said a couple times, I'd wait to make a full judgement on Gausman. It's possible there's nothing there, but I think this might be Folty pre 2018 Braves FO with the new analytics. Even if not, leaving the AL East, leaving the AL, I think he's a 3.5-4 ERA simply due to that. That may not seem like something exciting, but with his ability to pitch innings, that's a good pitcher to slot into the middle of the rotation and forget about as long as he's healthy as a FO.
However while there might be "something there", I'd temper expectations some, I don't think this ends up being Arrieta all over again.
I was thinking the same thing. Ha. I think we got a solid 3 in Gausman and I think he'll get a bit better with some analytic help, some better defense and hopefully consistency.Gausman showed glimpses but he must have been having flashbacks of the Baltimore defense.
I was checking to see how the prospects we traded to the O's did to finish the season after the trade. Everyone of them has been bad to terrible with the O's. While it's a smaller sample it might be we gave almost nothing or at best very little for Gausman.
JCE has some potential but other than that, AA fleeced them.

I still like Zimmermann, but odds are low enough on all of the included players that it stacks as a likely Braves win. Don’t forget absorbing O’Day lessened the Orioles’ ask, though—which in turn may also have precluding acquiring Daniel Murphy.
And we have O'Day for the bullpen next year.
