The Braves weren't willing to pitch Fried while the division was in play, but they are going to start him in a playoff game?

there is that Dodger lefty split in play, but ultimately this probably does not make much sense. It's a straight gamble. You've never really seen Fried pitch effectively in the majors. You've seen Newcomb flirt with a no-hitter twice. If you are going to roll the dice based solely on vs Lefty numbers, then Newcomb might be the better gamble.

I will say if this is even a consideration then the Braves really screwed up by giving all of those starts to Touki and Wright and Wilson rather than to Max. Should have given Fried a couple of those.

Bowman points out (with rare insight) that the Dodgers splits are reversed since acquiring Machado and regaining Turner. I don’t think it thus makes any sense to start Fried, or even entertain Newcomb unless he’s fire in his final tuneup and Teherán looks like trash; even then, I’d probably go with Toussaint.

Yeah...with Machado and Turner in the lineups their splits go the other way. So I'm good going with 4 RH starting pitchers.

However, I still think we want to go to a 9 man pen to offset their depth and position sharing. Pederson will start in left. Once our starter is out we want to have them pinch hit for him if possible. Utley at second is another one. And Muncy at first. And finally Grandal is a switch hitter who hits better from the left side. Once our starter is out we want a lefty against him.

In some of these situations we will have to burn two pitchers to get the matchup. For example, Pederson often bats leadoff against righties. What we want here is have a lefty in the game to pitch to the #9 hitter. Then you get to Pederson. Dodgers pinch hit. And we bring in a righty. It is going to be a reliever intensive process to get the matchups we want against a team like the Dodgers. The good news is we are in a position to carry a 9 man bullpen.

Dodgers win, Braves lead cut to .5 games

Cubs lose, their lead over Braves cut to 3 games.

Brewers/Rockies are 1.5 games back of Cubs/Dodgers.

Braves win over Mets in game expands their lead to 1 game over Dodgers. They are playing the Snakes and winning 1-0 in 6th

That win also cuts Cubs lead to 2.5 games. They are losing 6-0 to Pitts in 6th.

It'd be perfect if the Cubs lose and the D'Backs can win over the Dodgers. Rockies gonna win so that'd cut the 1st place lead to 2 games and the Rockies would only be .5 back of the Dodgers. The more I'm looking at everything, the more I kinda want 1st place playing the wild card and for the Cubs to get the Dodgers. That'd be unlikely, but getting home field and missing the opponent's ace would be enormous. Getting the Rockies in round 1 would be good too.

Of those two scenarios I think catching the Cubs is more likely

I'm sure this has been covered but who wins the tie breaker if the Cubs and Braves tie for best record?

Braves. They tied on the season head to head match up and the next tie breaker is intra-division record which the Braves crushed

It’s worth noting that next weekend, the Cubs will be hosting a rival in the Cardinals, who are also fighting for a postseason berth. The Dodgers have to go to San Francisco and don’t you know the Giants want to throw a wrench in their playoff plans.

by that same token, tho, we play the phillies. who would probably love to throw a wrench in our plans.
