Around the League: 2017 offseason edition / 2018 Season

After this season I’d imagine it would be more than 2/14....I’d imagine he will get an AAV close to the $11m he currently has after a career season and all star selection

I'm sure there are some dumb teams out there. But that 2nd half WRC+ of 88 fits right in with the previous two years of 98 and 93. He's a declining hitter who had a great 1st half. He will likely produce a 90 WRC+ the next two seasons.

Sure he has cooled off in the second half. But a $10-11m investment for a team in a similar position the braves were in when they signed him may not be too bad for him. Essentially put a body on the field and someone to help guide younger players...

Or maybe end up back in Baltimore, who knows

If last years market is any indication then I doubt Neck sniffs anything that close.

Look at Granderson last year.

There is not and has not been a particularly sound argument to bring Markakis back, even if he continued his first half onslaught. We have plenty of resources to upgrade at his position, and it’s our most obvious hole. We at least have controllable upside everywhere except catcher and 1 corner OF, and at least C we have Flowers as a really solid back up.

We need to find at least a semi stud through FA or trade to replace Markakis.

I've never had that big of a problem with Markakis, but if last off-season was any indicator, if he gets a two-year deal at anything over $10MM/AAV, I will be shocked.

I have thought about the QO in past but It seems pretty unlikely now that it is coming fast.

I was thinking he might have hopes of a long term deal that kept him in baseball and maybe guaranteed more than the QO, but not sure he gets there.

Would not be terrible to have him back but seems like you might as well do it cheaper if that’s the decision. 1 and team option.

Here is what I think the market will look like for some alternative choices for outfield this off-season

1) AJ Pollock $15M AAV for 4 years.
2) Harper $30M AAV for 8 years.
3) Markakis $10M AAV for 2 years.
4) Brantley $14M AAV for 4 years.

There are a lot of trade options. I'll just list a few and what I think it will cost to acquire them.
1) Eddie Rosario. Either Folty one for one or Newcomb plus a pretty good prospect (Fried, Wentz, Muller).
2) Max Kepler. One of Newcomb/Touki/Wilson/Wright/Gohara
3) Ian Happ. One of Newcomb/Touki/Wilson/Wright/Gohara
4) David Peralta. One of Newcomb/Touki/Wilson/Wright/Gohara
5) Josh Reddick. One of Fried/Wentz/Muller

Some teams will prefer a major leaguer like Newcomb, while others might prefer the upside of someone like Touki or Gohara. But roughly those are the likely trade chips for the outfielders we are going to be looking at.

If we can get Muk on a one-year deal for around $12M I would do it. It is the second year that is unappealing. Similarly it is often the length of the contracts for the other free agents that add risk. If we can get Pollack or Brantley on 2-3 year deals, that might be ok. Some team will likely be willing to offer them 4 or 5 years.

I don't trade Folty but I probably do any of those other deals. I think it would take more unless it were Touki or Wright.
Also I'd be interested in Brantley and Pollock. Prefer the trades tho.

I could see Happ being available for something like Newcomb, maybe have to throw in Wentz or Muller. Happ has very clear, not easily fixable issues just like Newcomb does.

**And I would do it, definitely if it were Newk straight up for Happ.

I think you're on the low end of AAV for pretty much all those guys. I would love to add Brantley, personally.

Maybe, but the market is not very kind to aging OF. Seems to be a lot on the market and teams want to go younger.

No way we even think about trading Folty. I would LOVE to nab Rosario though.

I think Nick gets a 2-3 year deal somewhere. No way he signs a one year deal. Pollock would be my first choice and then trading for somebody like Marte 2nd.

I don't think I could bear watching Happ strikeout twice each game, and Reddick looks like a significant downgrade. I would gladly pay your price (not Touki) for the others.

Are there any potential targets out there who are likely to be displaced by one of the big FA signings?
