2018 Offseason And Targets

I think that the Phillies think that they are closer than I think they actually are. I think.

they've just played their hand poorly, IMO. their signings last offseason didn't make much sense to me.

santana pushed their 1B to LF where he was terrible. santana wasn't good himself on defense and disappointed with the bat. they didn't seem to really care about defense at all. it hurt them repeatedly. they also signed him super early, to a deal he clearly would not have received if they had waited. but to be fair, no one knew last year's market would play out like that.

i guess i could see arrieta, but he was clearly declining and despite their hanging on last year, he didn't put them over the top, or even make them a contender.

it was just poorly thought-out, poorly spent money. they didn't seem to have a real plan in place. and that makes this offseason tough on them. unloading santana will be tough, and he doesn't really have a position on the current team (3B?!). their OF is a mess of bad defenders who can't hit nearly well enough to make up for it (like, not even close to well enough). kingery was a total mess last year, franco stunk again. hernandez is their 2nd best position player at the moment.

signing harper is well and dandy. he's a poor defender himself. that forces them to either move odubel back to CF (can he rebound defensively?) or move him to LF and have quinn man CF. who plays 3B and SS, and who catches?

then they need to figure out their pitching, as they will absolutely need more depth than they did last year, and they absolutely have no depth.

they're going to have to spend a boatload of money and spend it all very wisely, IMO, to get where they apparently think they're close to.

Why was everyone so sure we were set in infield? Was it an AA quote or assumption? Just wondering if AA's comment about SP could be hollow

Robinson Cano - 2B - Mariners
Andy Martino of SNY.tv reports that the parameters of a Mets-Mariners involving Robinson Cano would include Seattle covering $10 million annually over the final five seasons of his contract.
Cano is still owed $120 million, so this would take the contract down to about $70 million, or $14 million per season. There's more to the proposed deal, as the Mets would want the Mariners to take on Jay Bruce's contract ($26 million over the next two seasons) while also getting them to include either Edwin Diaz or Mitch Haniger in the deal. The Mets would presumably have to include a prospect to convince the M's to part with one of them. It's unclear how realistic this scenario is at this time, but Cano has a full no-trade clause and there might not be many takers on the trade front. We'll soon find out how determined the Mariners are to truly move Cano.

if the mets are getting cano at $14M per and also unloading bruce's contract, they'd have to pay handsomely to have haniger or diaz included.

I'd need to see if for another year-plus to agree. He has the stuff but has been inconsistent his entire career.

His peripherals and pedigree make it pretty clear it's not a fluke. The two years before were both inremental improvements as well. Pretty typical progression from a young top prospect

The Ms are pretty dumb

So they'd get Cano for 10 less mil per year and Diaz or Haniger. Haniger or Diaz on their own could net a haul. Nevermind, says the Mets want them to include Diaz or Haniger. Including them just to get Cano off the books would be dumb.

Ya, seriously... who would trade their elite closer just to unload a bad contract....

Not really the same but fine. But Cano's contract is worse than Melvin's, but thats an interesting trade for both sides. 10 mil a year for Cano isnt bad, not sure if the M's will include Diaz since he can net a haul alone. Hell the Braves should go for Diaz if he's available.

3:21 Diaz to ATL for Austin Riley, Kyle Wright & Drew Waters?
Steve Adams
3:22 Would be hard for the Mariners to pass that up, but also not sure the Braves would go to such lengths to get Diaz

AA
3:32 Bumgarner for Newcomb Pache and Gohara?
Steve Adams
3:32 I wouldn't give up that much for one year of Bumgarner, who, again, hasn't been very good for the past two years.
Well -- hasn't been elite. He's been good. But not great.

Pure lunacy.

Without searching everywhere, this may have been discussed but what would bringing Stanton here in a deal look like? It’s been mentioned on MLB-TV just throwing stuff out there. Assuming the Yankees want to sign Harper. First, Yankees have to pay. What would be next?

2019 29 New York Yankees $26,000,000 8.118
2020 30 New York Yankees $26,000,000 May opt out of contract following 2020 season
2021 31 New York Yankees $29,000,000 Miami Marlins to pay $30m to New York Yankees if Stanton does not opt out following 2020 season.
2022 32 New York Yankees $29,000,000
2023 33 New York Yankees $32,000,000
2024 34 New York Yankees $32,000,000
2025 35 New York Yankees $32,000,000
2026 36 New York Yankees $29,000,000
2027 37 New York Yankees $25,000,000
2028 38 New York Yankees *$25,000,000 $25M Team Option, $10M Buyout.

So the Yankees owe Stanton 2/52 through age 30, or 9/240 through age 37 (assuming the 2028 option is not picked up). I find it highly unlikely Stanton walks away from 7/218 by opting out after his age 30 season.

He is probably projected to produce the following WAR values over the next 9 seasons: 4.0, 4.0, 3.5, 3.0, 2.5, 2.0, 1.5, 1.0, 0.5 = 22 total, maybe a little less.

Considering the $/WAR value will be $11M+ by the early 2020s, the current Stanton contract represents almost exactly 0 surplus value...which is why the Marlins had to include $30M to make the trade happen.

In short, Stanton could probably be had for almost nothing if the new team takes on all of what the Yankees owe. I don't think it even resembles a viable option for the Braves.

Yeah, I wouldn’t assume the Braves would take on the salary. The Yankees would have to pay. Even if they paid half, we probably wouldn’t do it.
