Second Base Options

Anyone but Uggla.

Why was Elliot Johnson needed when we had Pastornicky?

If La Stella can prove he's at least "good enough" defensively, I think it would help his chances that he bats left-handed. If we go with a right-handed hitter as our regular 2B, we'd only have two regulars who bat left-handed (assuming McCann is gone). I was also impressed to see that his splits against lefties the past few years look pretty decent. If the Braves go with La Stella, will be fascinating to see how they spend their money this offseason. Pitching upgrades? Front-loaded extensions?

:happy0157:

He has way more potential and is consistently better in almost every way. The only thing Prado has him on is average. He is much better. And cheaper.

Still with the Prado hate I see.

The only thing true about that statement is that Zobrist is cheaper.

I hate the fact that Pastornicky got hurt. I think he absolutely could be a very good everyday 2B. I'm not against going with Pastornicky and Pena at 2B to open the season and let La Stella battle it out if we spend out money elsewhere.

Zobrist has the potential for a .940+ OPS season. He's done it before. Prado couldn't come close to that. Not even in 2008. So, Zobrist has more potential. He has more speed. Better baserunner (on top of more speed). Gets on base more often. Has more power. Better defense. All of that is true. Has nothing to do with hate. I don't hate any player.

Ah yes, I had quite forgotten about Pastornicky getting injured. Duh.

I think we should just be allowed to play with 8 players. Simba can handle the middle of the diamond by himself.

Zobrist did that exactly once, 5 yrs ago. He has not come anywhere close to repeating that and, he's 32. Hell Uggla had a .877 OPS 4 yrs ago. Why should we even try to upgrade at 2b if Uggla has the potential for that?

OBP is basically a wash between the two. Zobrist hits for more power but Prado hits for a significantly higher average. And Prado also K's at a much lower rate. The better defense is mostly only true at 2b. Prado is plus defender at 3 different positions.

Zobrist is better base stealer though. Wow, you got me there.

The truth of the matter is that going forward, Prado is much more likely to maintain his play over the last few yrs than Zobrist is.

So. Like I said, the only thing Prado has over him is average. Glad we agree.

Wait you think Prado is better than the BZA?

Let's take a nice healthy 4 year sample

Over the last 4 years Zobrist has a slash of .263/.357/.425 with a wRC+ of 121, 68 stolen bases, and a very healthy UZR (9.0 UZR/150) Prado over that same sample has a slash of .288/.337/.426 with a wRC+ of 108, 29 stolen bases, and has an UZR/150 at second base of -6.8

So Zobrist is a better hitter, baserunner, and fielder.

Zobrist is pretty much the 3rd best 2B in baseball. 4th best if Carpenter repeats this year. If you are having a draft of the best MLB players and you picked Prado over Zobrist for 2B you'd be dumb. Actually in general if you picked Prado over Zobrist you're dumb cause Zobrist is a freak of a defender who can play pretty much any position on the field and do it well (his 3 largest Samples are 2B, RF and SS where he carries big positives in the first 2 and is about average at SS)

I am amazed with all the posters that don't put La Stella first, second and third like Ramadon101 did.

Do whatever it takes to trade Uggla, even if it means eating practically all of his remaining salary. Tommy La Stella becomes our everyday 2nd baseman. Period. There should be no other consideration. He is exactly what this team needs.

I like La Stella as much as anyone on this board but we would be crazy to just hand him the 2B job right now. At most, La Stella/Pena/Pastornicky battle it out in ST.

I have no problem with Rev and Pena on the team, both are good backup major leaguers, but neither is near what La Stella is, and he will prove that as long as he is given the opportunity.

didn't we learn from chris johnson in this last series that having guys that don't strike out every other at bat is a good thing to have in a playoff series against a strong pitching staff?

Clearly you didn't learn that Johnson IS a high strike out guy. Good lord the bloop king sure has pulled the wool over the casual fans' eyes to make them think he's something that he's not...
