Harold Baines to the HoF

CyYoung31

Shift Leader
That’s right. Harold Baines and his whopping 38.7 WAR has been elected to Cooperstown.

For reference, Jason Heyward has already accumulated 35 WAR in his career. Outstanding.

Wow. 22 years in the bigs with exactly 2 season of greater than a 3 WAR. We should start a list of much better outfielder types who are in the Veterans Committee (or whatever it is called now) classification and are not in the Hall.

My list: Murphy, Parker, Pinson, Evans, Gonzalez (x2) Wynn, Oliver, Staub. Please feel free to add.

I’m not including Andruw here since he is still on the active ballot.

One of the worst selections for the hall of all time.
Like you said, you put a player like Baines in then Murp or Druw not being in is a joke.
Baines was a solid player but I don’t know if I’d even put him in the hall of very good...

This guy doesn't pass the sabermetric or the classic stat test. What a weird selection. Opens the door for people like JD Drew, Moises Alou, David Justice and Bobby Abreu to be selected. Eff it, nominate my favorite Brave Ron Gant for Hof.

Feed McGriff can't be considered but Baines can? At least Fred was at 52.6 WAR...this selection was...unbelievable...

It would get to be a pretty long list. If Baines is in, I can't believe someone like Vada Pinson is not. Pinson's problem is that he tailed off markedly after a very auspicious start to his career. As for Dale Murphy, his six-season stretch from 1982-1987 was pretty remarkable and should merit strong consideration.

Does anyone still question why folks with real baseball knowledge no longer care about silly things like the MVP, HoF and RoY awards?

If i'm not mistaken, this is Crime Dog's 10th and final year on the baseball writers ballot. After that, he would qualify to be on this ballot...idk how Murph wasn't on this ballot.

It seems to me this is a overreaction on a lot of people's part. He was put in by what was the Veteran's Committee.

Sure he doesn't belong in the Hall of fame, but good on him for accomplishing something he shouldn't have.

BTW this committee has Greg Maddux and Ozzie Smith on it.

It's simply stupid at this point. Pointless "experts" who know more than the game is truly ruining what awards should stand for. If it's not popularity, it's about the time x player didn't talk to me, the guys a jerk..blah, blah...unreal.

What makes Baines' selection even more odd is that he never won any of those awards. Highest rank in MVP voting was ninth and he won one Silver Slugger. He comes up short on both statistical and prestige award counts.

What they've done to Curt Schilling is absolutely shameful. You can think the guys a dick, you can think the guy has awful politics, you can think whatever about him. The fact remains that the dude is a 1st ballot hall of famer and they have done him so dirty.

Schilling belongs in the Hall of Fame, but I've never understood why the guy left tickets for his dead dad at the will call window during his career. Great pitcher with more than a couple of screws loose.
