I've long suspected AA had a boner for Donaldson, and his quotes about JD being the key to the off season backs that up.
I think JD was priority #1 all along, and signing Mac was a direct result of that. The quotes lumping Cutch, Markakis, and Cargo together as 1-2 year options tells me AA misread the cOF FA market a bit when making the overall off season plan. The fact they are probably one of the teams with a 2 year offer out to Happ tells me they misread the FA SP market a bit as well.
If they thought they could get Cutch on a 1-2 year deal, and budgeted accordingly, then it is entirely possible the FA they sign for LF will be on a 1-2 year deal..and he will be a very underwhelming addition.
They have probably circled the wagons a bit after the Cutch signing went down to regroup, which is why we are seeing the comments about patience now. They have to decide to either pony up prospect capital, or wait for a value FA to fall in their laps later in the off season. For a team trying to build off an NL East title, taking the chance on such a value FA addition presenting itself seems like a bad gamble to take...and ultimately end up with Cargo in LF.
