2018 Offseason And Targets

We should definitely get players who are below average offensively from the team that sucks because that’s the best use of limited prospect resources.

Why not trade for someone who is actually above average at the plate for the second most offensive minded position on the field?

It'd be great if you understood how to actually evaluate the offensive numbers

Steamer is giving him his BABIP bump and projecting a 110 wRC+.

Outside of the decrease in Ks and smaller increase of BBs this year, there isn't much exciting going on with his peripherals.

ISO, wOBA, wRC+ staying remarkably consistently.

Nothing remarkable about his launch angle, exit velocity, or hard hit rates. He's shown some increases there, but it's still somewhat middling.

.......

For all that, if that's the move it is what it is. It probably is preferable to giving at bats to Adam Duvall. You'd like a contender to be adding something more proven offensively in a corner. It's odd to be in the position of taking flyers on post hype sleepers when you are a defending division champion.

For a 25 year old... major adjustments in K/BB rates is a much bigger deal than anything else you mentioned and you mentioned he improved in all of them lol

If the Padres trade one of Reyes or Renfroe, I'd look at one of them for the right price too. Earlier this off-season MLBTR reported: "Out of the Padres’ current group of outfielders, Cassavell classifies Wil Myers, Travis Jankowski, Hunter Renfroe and Franmil Reyes as trade candidates, adding that one of the latter two is likeliest to end up on the move. As right-handed sluggers with defensive limitations, Renfroe and Reyes offer similar skill sets, observes Cassavell, who notes that dealing one of the two would enable San Diego to move Myers from third base back to the outfield."

Lol... you want Renfroe but are against Kepler... wow...

I've now heard it all... someone prefers Mazara and Renfroe over Kepler... wow.... I just can't stop saying wow...

Let's go for a 1-2 (and that's being generous for both) WAR player instead of a likely 2-3 WAR player (as a floor)... great, awesome idea

You'll consider Mazara but not Keppler.... lol... that's rich

yea if he came cheap enough as he's shown he can put up a .783-.791 OPS vs righties the last three years and is only 23 too. But as I said, only if others on my list didn't work out. Unless Texas decides to trade him for cheaper than expected.

Renfroe put up an .805 ops last year, not that i would choose him over others i listed. I expect your boy Kepler to improve but he may just end up a .750-800 OPS player at best. I am looking at players with a better track record already and firstly those that hit righties with an OPS over .800 as I said.

When you add in defense... Kepler has a much better track record and his peripherals are much better as well. He's not my boy... I'm hoping for bigger, but certainly he's much higher than Refroe and freaking Mazara on my list

im not worried about defense so much for left field, as Camargo/Duvall can help out and will need playing time too. i'm more focused on players that can hit righties and put up an ops over .800 to improve on offense.

Per Passan: “What
@TBrownYahoo
saw from Troy Tulowitzki today dovetails with what a number in attendance told me: He looks fit, he’s moving very well and if he’s anything like he was today, he’s going to be able to help a contender. And for the minimum salary at that.”

lol...apparently on MLB Radio Frenchy said we're in on Harper

I know it sounds crazy and hard to believe but if Liberty Media has intentions of selling at all then Harper would be a really good selling point to a potential buyer. And like I said earlier, AA leaving the WM early to meet with Liberty execs in Colorado is not something I recall the past GMs doing.

Outside of an increase in BB rate and decrease in K rate? What exactly are you looking for in terms of improvement? His improvement wasn’t some minor amount. Projecting a .280 BABIP is perfectly reasonable.

He’s definitely not my top choice, but when deciding between a 25 year old who just made significant improvements in his BB and K rates vs an old guy like Markakis or CarGo, I think the choice is pretty obvious.

Frazier isn’t proven either, but I would be in favor of adding him if the value is right as well.

The Braves aren’t exactly in a position to pick up a sure fire 3 win guy anymore unless AA wants to pay for Haniger.

He would definitely be good for marketing, that's for sure. FWIW, the company line on both of those is that LM said they're wouldn't consider selling for another 7 - 10 years, and that the GM trip was "pre-scheduled."

phillies loading up, ''The Phillies have agreed to a minor league contract with infielder Phil Gosselin, tweets Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia. Presumably, he’ll head to Spring Training on a non-roster invitation and compete for a bench spot with his new organization.''
