The Trump Presidency

There are certain flavors of lib that’re angry about it for reasons ranging from bad-but-understandable, bad but bad, and really not that bad. If you read the recent AP article about Trump’s call with Erdogan, it’s not hard to understand.

I’ve been pretty clear. I’m glad for the prospect of ending direct military involvement. As much as I think the process absolutely sucks, I’ll look at the silver lining of at least, maybe, putting some cracks in the Forever War orthodoxy. But some people who are carping about it have some legitimately reasonable points. Try that perspective on for size, even if you don’t agree with them, instead of just going for the cheap hypocrisy hot take.

I read snarky quips daily on here in the Russia thread but you get upset about me pointing out libs are angry with Trump for doing something they support?

I agree with your perspective, Julio. I really do. I didn't feel the need to write out a paragraph saying as much.

I think it's sad the people aren't celebrating this. They are not celebrating it bc it's Donald Trump doing it. It's that simple. The process would not have mattered I am certain.

But hey, the neocons are upset too.

I'm thrilled about it.

as the resident neocon I'll chime in and say we had a chance to bleed the Russians dry in Syria at little cost to ourselves

The thing that is making me chuckle is the hypocrisy that is all over the place on the latest Syria move. Some of the same folks who were calling Obama feckless are giving Trump kudos for this when the approaches are comparable. Only difference is that Obama wanted Assad out (or seemed to want Assad out) and Trump has come to not care even after he dropped a bevy of cruise missiles into Syria. My only beef with the move is that it leaves the Kurds hanging.

I would kill to be in Berkeley right now to see where my old friends on the left stand with respect to withdrawing from Syria and afghanistan

hypocrisy...what a shocking thing...first time in my life I've encountered it and it is a shocking sight

I'm just laughing at the overlapping hypocrisy in this instance and a little p*ssed that it is going to be open season on the Kurds coming from three directions.

I’ve always supported Trump on the majority of his decisions but this withdrawal baffles me. Obama pulling out of Iraq, gave ISIS a safe space to grow and shelter. Everyone can see that now, or I hope liberals could admit that. Pulling out of Syria will have worse consequences in the long run. It’s gives Iran breathing room and Syria will become a puppet state for Russia.

washing our hands of various messy situations is always an option...the problem is these situations tend to get even more messy after we leave...

so did Trump's conversation with Whitaker about the SDNY case against Cohen take place on an airport tarmack... if so I believe DOJ precedence requires recusal

speaking of hypocrisy...was anyone exercised about Clinton and Lynch exchanging pleasantries on that airport tarmack

The boarder wall is slvery stupid and a huge waste of money.

I'm quite confident it won't ever get built.ill be disappointed if it does

yet you don’t rail against the desire like you would if a democrat wanted to spend less money on something far more important. you shrug when the deficit explodes under republicans.

Considering the original core of ISIS was ex-Iraqi army and intelligence guys, you might think there were even more lessons than this one to be learned. I take your point, but it seems like continuing to try to learn better ways to put toothpaste back in the tube is less useful than having the good sense not to empty the tube in the first place.

totally different. one was related to hillary clinton, one isn’t.

to be fair the Trump-Whitaker and Clinton-Lynch parallels are not exact

in the former we have someone singled out by federal prosecutors as directing an inferior to commit two felonies

the latter involves a relative of someone under under investigation not the person involved

in the former the person "working the ref" is the sitting president

so maybe it was a stretch on my part bringing up Clinton-Lynch

btw anyone here want to recall their personal reaction to Clinton-Lynch?

alternative history is a genre of literature and I suppose analysis we all have to dabble in...I wonder what the world would be like if Saddam had been left unmolested
