2018 Offseason And Targets

Seems like lessons weren't learned from a year ago. This years Greg Holland?

The agents as a group seem to be behind the times a bit with regards to how teams are now valuing players. Their skill set doesn’t really line up very well with the analytical nature of the modern FO, so they are messing up a bit right now.

If Grandal really turned down 4/60 and ended up signing for 1/18 he needs to find a new agent with modern analytics savvy.

I personally don't understand the desire to trade Newcomb. He's demonstrated no hit stuff vs upper division opponents several times in his career. the control is an issue but it's been known to improve over time for guys like this before.

While it's entirely possible he's nothing more than a stuff four, that's got a ton of value when he makes the minimum. That's value whichever way you want to cash it in. Trading him means you either start over with a prospect or you spend money or capital in replacing him in the rotation with no guarantee that you match his production and a certain risk that he puts it together for a bit.

I have no problem trading him for a true solution in the OF, or for a better pitcher with 2-3 years of control, but have no particular desire to move him otherwise.

i'm by no means desperate to trade him. i think his value could build because there's a solid chance, to me, that he'll be better this year than last. i'm just not opposed to it if a team values him nicely and it upgrades another area. that's all.

I think the Nats and Brewers both did well with Dozier and Grandal.

Hopefully AA will be getting some value by waiting it out as well.

The worrisome thing about Grandal now not being there as a fallback option for the Dodgers is that it might entice them to turn up the heat for Realmuto. They could use Verdugo in a trade to get the right-handed bat they want in J. T. and replace Verdugo with Harper.

And we can beat that offer easily if its determined that JTR is an important piece for us to obtain... AA knows that no one has come close to beating our offer likely so why would he up the offer at this point?

If the QO doesn't disappear in the next CBA, I smell a strike.

And as much as I hate to admit it, I wouldn't blame the players a bit for walking over it. They were stupid for letting it happen in the first place, so it's on them - but there's no reason the owners shouldn't realize how unfair the situation is and renegotiate that. Now that most teams are smart enough not to hand ridiculous contracts to 30-35 year old players, there's no reason each team shouldn't have some extra cash when it comes time for them to sign a big free-agent.

seems like an easy compromise to me.

Keep the QA to comp the team losing the player and let the player have a shot at the big money one year deal.

Just eliminate the penalty on the signing team. Adds some extra picks to the draft but we have that now.

FWIW, in this interview AA says we have “plenty of money to spend” but we won’t spend just to spend

Sounds like all the people constantly trying to spin Trump lies into misunderstandings to me. A third year for either Brantley or McCutchen wouldn't have cost picks or the prospects he seems unwilling to part with, and if that really was the case there's no reason we should be left with Cody Allen or Greg Holland as pen upgrade choices.

We may have some money left, but I call bull*hit on the idea that we have "plenty to spend".

Had to get political, huh?

JTR market is picking up steam now. Makes perfect sense:

I still think AA is waiting on the JTR situation to be finalized to make his big trade (since JTR may be that big trade), and JTR probably won't be traded until right around the time (probably after) Grandal signs.

Once the Grandal/JTR situation sorts itself out, I expect whatever moves AA has primed to be executed rather quickly...like the Mac/JD acquisitions. Value is certainly a primary consideration, but the Braves still have to get impact players, so AA can't be driven only by value.

Hopefully the Grandal signing was the domino that allows AA to finish the Braves offseason
